I lost my ignition key and I have a spare to get into the door. Would it be cheaper to replace the whole iginition myself or should I call a locksmith? I would imagine I have to take the steering wheel off or something. That I do not wanna do, but if a locksmith can cut a new lock for it for $50 I'm all for it.

Any clues as to what to do or how any of this works?

It's for the 90 K5 Blazer.

Thanks in advance.

Then you will be standing there with the steering wheel in your hands and not one step closer to replacing the ignition switch.

Find the original key, and make several copies of it and place them in places you won't lose them.

You'd all be liars if you said you have never lost anything yourselves.

No, I'm telling you, I had to do this on my Chevy. You can pull the wheel if you want, it will make getting at things slightly easier, but I am 99% positive you don't need to.

What is the proper way to do it? Sounds like removing the steering wheel doesn't help.

Bite the bullet and have a key cut. I can tell you from experience, it is faster and cheaper than tearing into the steering column to replace the ingition switch and the lock cylinder.

What did that run ya?

I'd rip out the ignition wires from the column and 'hot wire' it.

You know....like they do in the movies all the time.
Just find the right 2 wires....spark 'em a little.....and it'll fire right up!

:P

Getting a new key cut is probably the easiest and cheapest thing to do... you didn't have/keep any spares?

With your seemingly endless problems with vehicles, sell them all and take the bus.

Ever since it was stolen and recovered it's had an oddball ignition and key. I just never bothered to get another and actually forgot about it. I'll look for another day before I call anyone over. Soon as I find it I'll make three keys!

Time and money and aggravation, I will never do it again, I will call a locksmith.

Replacing the cylinder is eezy peezy. Take off wheel, remove turn signal plate, one screw and out with the cylinder.

Don't I need a special tool for the steering wheel?

justbob

No. Remove horn assembly, then you will see the one nut that holds it on, can't remember the size, probably 3/4-7/8. Loosen the nut ALMOST, but NOT completely off, grab the wheel with both hands and rock it side to side while bulling back really hard, it will pop right off in seconds. If you remove the nut before this action, will WILL brake your nose with the steering wheel. This isn't a hard job at all, I'm sure once you have the wheel off you will see exactly what you have to do.

The big problem will be getting the car someplace where the keys can be programmed to the car. Car and keys are required at the same time and my guess is a trip to the dealer behind the tow truck! No program no start due to the security system built into the car. Maybe thats why its called Anti Theft!:dunno:

Yup looks like the same keys you would find on any GM vehcile for like the past 40 years or so. Probably looks like the same key Martyo has for his new ride.

As far as the Marauder is concerned you are correct. I had that done a month ago or so. I didn't know they actually needed the car. I thought they could copy one key off the other. I was wrong.

I'm going to fish around for another day. I really dislike misplacing anything and literally pay the price.

Since it's a GM, just hammer a flat bladed screwdriver into the lock cylinder and pry it out. Then that's your new key!

I replaced an ignition cylinder in a 2nd gen camaro, outside in a parking garage, having lost the keys for it.It was a pretty decent pain in the ass taking the wheel off and changing out the cylinder
