some of you may have seen this thread:
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=59723

i went and picked up this 96 EB bronco yesterday. it has the 5.8L motor and is completely rust free on the body. it only has a small amount of surface rust on parts of the chassis, id say its no worse the my MM. its no rocket ship by any means but certainly gets up to speed faster then my 91 ranger 4banger. i bought this from the second owner who bought it from the original (obviously) and the original owner has a manila envelope about an inch thick with receipts including the original window sticker! even with the lift this thing rides extremely smooth, you wouldn't even know it had a lift.

now for the fun part.

on my way up to get this, i was en-route with my mm. i got about 10 miles from home when i stopped for gas, i noticed a noise from under the hood, i popped the hood to see what was up. the sound was emitting from the alternator, didn't sound very bad so i shut the hood and when on my way. well luckily i was watching the volts on the scan gauge and i noticed they were pretty low, about 13v. then they got even lower to about 11.3v and the battery light came on. so i bust a u-turn keeping an eye on the volts knowing the alt was going up in smoke, literally. i get about a mile from my house and started to feel the power steering go intermittent and i knew what that meant. seconds later the belt shredded with a nice "SNAPP". of coarse since i REALLY needed to be home like NOW there was a stupid dually in front of me doing 10 under. but in the end i made it home just before it got too hot. i shut it down half way up my drive at about 220* and coasted the rest of the way. heres the after math, i havent taken it apart yet.

shredded belt, i always wanted a 4 rib setup!

That is one nice Bronco Dave! Did they convert these to five seaters over the years? I seem to remember mine with only two belts in the back?

Hey Dave,
Nice Bronco!

Can I start some trouble right away??

You know that Edelbrock makes a really sweet 'Power Package' for 5.8L/351W trucks?
It includes a nice set of Performer aluminum cylinder heads, cam & lifters, etc.....:hmmm:

http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc/power_package/performer_power_packages.shtml

You can thank me later...:D

Holy CRAP! Isn't that a new alternator??? Did the nut start to walk off? Your story is almost the same as when I went to buy my old Bronco. We were pretty much forced to buy it just to get back home, but it was all good.

no Bob, its not new, its my original. i cant say its entirely the alts fault, when i was removing the stock pulley with a unmentioned tool, i dropped it not once but TWICE! im pretty sure that was what did it in. i knew putting it back on that it probably wouldn't last but it went about 2k miles so i thought maybe it was ok. i cant tell if the nut just backed off or the shaft actually broke, if you think about it there isnt much room for the pulley to come off like that unless the shat broke. i guess when i get to it ill report back.

Dave, I haven't seen a Bronco of that era in months.
Last night as I was coming around the DC Beltway heading home I passed a Bronco that was almost* exactly like yours.

It was a Pacific green over tan EB with MD tags!

I hung along side and was trying to see the driver, until I saw that it was not you driving.

*The only difference that I now notice was that it had chrome step bars.
