Well...it's winter...and the majority of us live in the great white north.
The car is parked and discussing totally off topic things are in order again.

Last year's Stanley Cup thread was entertaining...might as well start another.

Soooo...where are we?

Since my loser city cannot hold an NHL team I have no other option but to follow our LEM, the farm team for the Colorado Avalanche.
I like the Jackets...but Columbus is 2 hours off and Killjoy lives there lolz.

Gage and I are all about the CAPS this year!
Sorry Bob, still a bigtime B's fan, but....
Oh yeah, F the Pens....regardless my son wears #87.

A couple years ago I bought my dad a gigantic history of hockey book. It is awesome. He is a Canadians fan which makes no sense since he's lived in Chicago since childhood and has never even been to Canada. But, he swears I cannot possibly be his son since I am a Cubs fan and he is a White Sox fan, lol. Whenever hockey or baseball is mentioned it reminds me of our friendly father/son rivaly, good times. After seeing the 'hawks whoop the Redwings a couple weeks ago in an overtime shootout, I think they will make it this year.

I love my Panthers but they aren't going to get it done.

From the East I think the Devils and Caps have the best shot. However the inconsistency at Goalie may hurt the Caps. They can score no doubt about that, with or without Ovie in the game but he does make it easier. However in the playoffs or in the cup when the pressure is on I don't think they have the goalies to back it up. I think the Devils getting Ilya is huge a huge pick up and should really pay off for them if he sparks some of the guys who are struggling watch out.

From the West the Blackhawks, Vancouver, and LA. San Jose is doing so well but they always choke I don't know if having Heatley is enough for them to actually swallow the first round and move on. The Blackhawks have the same problems as the Caps with the goaltending situation. Also Hossa has not really been as productive as he should have be. Vancouver has a solid Goalie in Luongo and they do have a decent offense. LA Has put together something interesting and Quick is doing alright, if he can continue his play I think they will go far in the playoffs.

Unless San Jose can actually make it to the Finals I think the winner will be from the East and it will be the Devils or the Caps.

Tough year to be a Hurricane fan, but I did a new official Whaler's hat. Looks to me that the Caps are the class of the East, but don't count out Ottawa. In the West, I'm actually leaning Vancouver (you heard it here first).

Well its most certainly not gonna be my Bruins :-(! It will the Caps (who I despise!) And the Blackhawks in the finals this year! Needless to say I'll be rooting for the Blackhawks! As somebody stated earlier in this thread, they have by far the best uniform in the NHL, the Bruins are a distant 2nd....... but that's not why I'm rooting for them, I would root for the dreaded Habitants before the Caps!

All eyes are on Olympic Hockey right now.

All I can say about the USA Women's team is OMG!:bows:
These girls are putting a hurt on their opponents.

12-1 over China
13-0 over Russia
6-0 over Finland
Now it's off to the semi-finals against Sweden on Monday.
The Canadian women's team is doing just as well.

I see Canada and USA in the gold medal round here.
Winner....? This will be a game to watch.

Now to men's hockey.

Teams to watch here; Canada, USA, and Russia.

I would love to see the USA play one of these two teams for the gold...but I am not so sure. We have played really good hockey. Not so much aggressive...but precise.

Slovakia beating Russia on Thursday was a real surprise.

Sunday is BIG.

Please support our USA team and cheer for win over Canada!

GO USA!!!

I just went to my first Blackhawks game in over 15 years Feb 9th. They beat Dallas in a shoot out. Was it fun? Yes. Would I go again? Maybe if they win a G*d Damn Stanley Cup. Im still bitter from the 1992 finals. I have not been a fan since but maybe theres hope this year!

You know...hearing this really makes me wonder.
The Hawks are good. Actually better than good.
41 and 15 with 87 points????

Jeez...I wish Cleveland had a team that faired half that well.
Our AHL affiliate barely clears .500 on a season.

You have a good thing, and winning the Cup is awesome, but having a consistantly good team year after year is truly a godsend.

This coming from a guy who has watched his Browns lose for the last 60years....:P

Some shots from the tournament my son's team was in last month.
They lost in the final round, but Gage racked up two hat tricks, overall 12 goals, 2 assists, and 2 PIM.

March madness starts tommorrow and runs through the weekend.
I am renting a high speed f2.8 200mm tele, so the pics should be better.

Last weekend the kids were able to play boot hockey.
One end is down to the liner, the other (in the shade) is still 5-6" deep.

If I had it enclosed we'd be good.

Why am I so nervous?
I mean the 54 & 15 Capitols are playing the 'barely made the playoffs 39 & 33 Canadiens....:dunno:

Here's why!
VVVVVVVV

From the Washington Post:
The Washington Capitals have faced the frightening prospect of failure -- and then failed spectacularly-- as often, as infamously, and usually as comically as any pro team in sports in the last 30 years.
But they have never had quite the chance to fail as badly as they do on Wednesday night at Verizon Center. Before you can avoid such a fate in sports, you have to acknowledge it and face it. You can't leave it standing behind you, tapping you on the shoulder.

In the last 25 years, the Capitals have blown a two-game lead in a playoff series six times. All six times, they finished in a total tailspin, losing either their last three or four straight games.

But if the Caps squander a two-game lead for a seventh time, this time against Montreal, they will break new ground.
No top-seeded team has ever blown a 3-1 lead to an eighth-seeded team.

Normally, this column stays 100 miles away from pep talks. But, frankly, I'm sick and damn tired of the same Caps choke story. It's beyond old, beyond sad, beyond undeserved. Eventually, no response -- commiseration, castigation or comedy -- applies.

Ignore the Caps' losses in Game 7 at home to end their last two seasons. Painful as they were, and fresh in mind, they barely move the capital punishment meter. Return to '03, '96, '95, '92, '87 and '85 if you want pain. I re-read my columns on all of them. It's incredible: six seasons that ended with a combined 20 straight defeats (with 12 losses at home) after gaining 2-0 or 3-1 leads.

One year ended on a triple-overtime power play after a too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty. Another year died after 73 saves in quadruple overtime by Kelly Hrudey. A Caps team with the second-best record in the NHL blew a 3-1 lead over the Pens. In the first period of yet another Game 7, the Caps allowed a 130-foot, unmolested, end-to-end, one-man scoring rush just 97 seconds into play (two Caps defensemen knocked each other down). Then, later in the same period, the Caps shot the puck into their own net.

Repeat as needed: "This is not the same team."

Nevertheless, a loss Wednesday would have seismic implications. When my son was a child, he got mad and said, "I'm going to get the old people out and get some new people in." If the Caps lose this Game 7, that's what owner Ted Leonsis may say about both his beloved Caps and his newly acquired Wizards.
Becoming a championship franchise is a process. And it's seldom a straight line. However, there has to be one constant in an elite organization. Everybody has to love a challenge and rise to it the instant it arrives -- even if it's an unwanted, despised challenge.

Great athletes want tough conditions and harsh tests, even ones that seem unfair or threaten them with embarrassment. No, nobody says, "Let's lose a few games to the Canadiens, push ourselves to the cliff edge, then see if we can make our team tougher by winning a Game 7 that could mortify us all."

But once a Game 7 rushes up in your face, you'd better find a way to welcome it. Or it will eat you, like it has many Caps teams in the past.

Hang on to your beers tonight gentlemen!

Go back to the hills of Fredneck and choke the chicken or deer. Everyone else is rocking the Red as we roll towards the Stanley Cup finals. :beer:Oh go eat at Cracker Barrel.

But if the Caps (will) squander a two-game lead for a seventh time, this time against Montreal, they will break new ground.
No top-seeded team has ever blown a 3-1 lead to an eighth-seeded team.

Normally, this column stays 100 miles away from pep talks. But, frankly, I'm sick and damn tired of the same (old) Caps choke story.

[COLOR="red"]A Caps team with the second-best record in the NHL blew a 3-1 lead over the Pens. In the first period of yet another Game 7, the Caps allowed a 130-foot, unmolested, end-to-end, one-man scoring rush just 97 seconds into play (two Caps defensemen knocked each other down). Then, later in the same period, the Caps shot the puck into their own net. ...

The same old song and dance the Caps will choke because they SUCK no ifs, ands or buts!!!

That'd be okay as it would be Montreal vs Vancouver. I don't think it would do much to NBC's market share. Most hockey fans (and it's not that big of a number) would still watch. Remeber people still watch such NFL Superbowl classics like St. Louis vs Tennessee.

I'm tired of the current format and trying to appease american TV.

How does this sound,

4 divisions, 10 teams each,

US east, US west, Canada, Europe,

Each team plays 1 game against the other division teams {30 games}

Each team plays 5 games against its division rivals {45 games}

Top 4 teams in each division make the playoffs and play each other till there is one champ from each division.

Then its US east vs. US west for an american champ,
Canadian champ vs. europe champ.

Winners for the world championship.

Yes back when the canadian dollar was 62 cents and players were paid in US dollars, and there was no salary cap, a couple smaller teams left.
Things are different now.

I think the US TV and the american fans would love this format, a east-west final every year with the winner playing perhaps...Paris?

And you wonder why we don't want your Health Care? :P The talent pool is deleted enough now without going to 40 teams (MHO). The only change that is needed is to fix the clock on American TV. The Hockey clock is supposed to "count up" from 0 to 20:00, not down from 20:00 to 0

Who says the clock should count up?

Tradition. Until about 5 or so years ago, it did. This way the clock matches the official scorer's sheet, e.g. goal scored at 12:14 on sheet now shows as 8:46 on TV (and some stadium clocks). The TV clock (counting down) was to try to appease the un-educated American Hockey fans. Make the clock work like football, basketball, etc.

Another problem, you have to tell 4 US cities they can no longer have their franchise, and have to find money and players to make 4 more Canadian teams. Championship in Paris? That kills a big chunck of the "trickle down economy" for the two championship cities, which in turn erodes fan and local gov't support.

I miss the days when they had the Wales and the Campbell Conferences, and the Adams, Patrick, Norris and Smythe divisions.

Now it just seems like there's too many teams, I don't follow hockey any more.
Getting rid of the blue line and the shootouts at the end ruined it for me.
What made breakaways cool is you didn't see them often.
When you see 80 breakaways in a game, it loses its luster.
I'm a big fan of "ugly" hockey, grinding in the corners, more defensive style, not a million breakaways all the time.
The fighting also lost its luster because they cracked down on it initially but now it just seems staged or something, I can't explain it.
The only 2 sports that I actually liked watching on TV are shadows of their former selves:
auto racing and ice hockey

BTW I was a skating before I could walk, lifelong, diehard NHL fan.
When I was a kid the players didn't wear helmets.

Oh yes hartford, gordie howe at 50, he is like 80 or so now and he still looks like he could kick your butt!

As for logistics since you would play most of your games in your own division, including the 1st 2 rounds, travel wouldn't be as bad as you would think, for the bruins, one 4 or 5 game road trip to europe, same to canada and west USA, you would have to add travel days in the final 2 rounds of the playoffs.

I'm not a vancouver fan but that obvious goalie interference bye buffelin should not be tolerated by the NHL. Put the puck in the goalies feet and charge with a fridge on skates and blow the goalie and the puck in.

The announcers were saying the defence let him in, but if the defence stands up to the guy he just blows the defenceman, the goalie and the puck in. All the silly little hooks and holds they call and they allow that stuff in the crease.

The fridge got a hat trick, silly.

He is also a White Sox fan, and tells me I can't be his kid because I'm a Cubs fan. I'm sensing a pattern in his swearing I can't be his kid...:P

Damn, hard game to watch if you're a Canucks fan. If the Hawks keep crashing the net like that we'll be done. Fugly gets a hat trick....OUCH.

Oh well, we were down 2 games to 1 against LA too. GO CANUCKS~!
The canucks are in tough now!

I was glad to see the flyers win last night, a sweep between those two great franchises would suck.

I'm almost rooting for the habs tonight, what they are and have done to the easts kingpins is impressive, a diehard leaf fan wanting montreal to win? Does a yankee fan want the red sox to win?

Everyone is excited!!!! When the SOX won it just seemed only one side of the town was celebrating (Chicago favors the sCrUBS), but this time around everyone is in. I even purchased 3 jerseys as they were tied 1-1 and told the Mrs I have an overwhelming feeling they were gonna take it away from Philly tonight and with that I immediately left for the store tuning into am radio. Sorry to say, but I must admit that I'm a bandwagon jumper. I paid close attention to almost every sport but Hockey, and I tell ya once the Hawks were in the playoffs and rumors of them playing like a championship team, I started giving them a second look and the sport itself. I realized it was Football, Lacrosse, Soccer, Baseball, Golf, Wrestling, and Boxing in one! Wow... and to think what I missed out on all these years :shake:. Pretty nerve wrecking in overtime and there was a slight delay on my part in keeping up with the puck that KANE #88 scored. I knew it was good when the HAWKS started celebrating instantly, at that time I knew Chicago was crowned! I had to pause my celebration and watch the instant replay, I just could not keep up with that last shot. The Kid and I jumped in the car for quick cruise down the street for some yells, cheers, and a lot of beeping, (you know... live life even on a school night)Lol, I think my son saw his first pair of real titts... Oh Boy, I didn't see that coming! <-- I know NOT very fatherly of me. City wise it seemed the fans were behaved and I'm sure it also had to do with a lot of past practice that Chicago Police had ("Repeat the Sixpeat"-Bulls). G00d times, GOOOOO HAWKS!!!
