View Full Version : Got searched this mo'nin.
Washed the Marauder last night, got it all spiffied up for a company luncheon out at some golf country club today, figured we'd big pimp it today instead of Amy's civic, and I got my CORRECTED tags in the mail yesterday, lol. So this morning we get to the security gate at work and the police scan our badges and announce they need to do a random security search of the car. I said "Seriously." They say yeah, need to check under the hood and in the back seat. "Fine" I say and pop the hood latch and unclick the door locks. One guard opens the back driver side door, looks around, whistles, closes the door and proceedes to stare at the car and smile. This whole time, the policeman at the front is STILL trying to get the hood latch undone. So I look at the other guard like wtf and he shrugs and rolls his eyes as if to say "my partner is a marooon". I finally put the car in Park (you'd think they would have told me to before standing in front of it) and as I start to get out and help, he figures it out. This was about a quarter to 6, still nice and dark, so when the hood came up and the light came on, it was like that scene from Pulp Fiction when they open the briefcase. Guard 1- "DAMN! That is clean." Guard 2 -"That's a big engine." So they asked the usual Marauder questions, what is it, etc. etc. Told them I'd take them for a ride one day, I thought they were going to high five each other they were so happy. So we pull away, I goosed the gas, Amy says "Yeah that was totally fake, they just wanted to check it out." I tend to agree, I've never seen these 2 guys in the almost 2 years I've worked here, but it was all good. Big blue, still making them ask questions at 7 years old.

I get the random searches at the Nuclear plants from time to time. Before I open the hood I always say, "Before you look, promise me you won't tell the Chevy boys what you are about to see."

May have to steal that line
The police here are friendly for the most part. The Marines on the other hand live for that "Authorized Deadly Force" stuff when they move nuclear components around here, which is fine, the more security the better as far as I'm concerned.

Are you required to park a certain way? I did some work at a natural gas transfer station and was required to back in to a long row of other vehicles. When i asked why they said incase of vehicle fire they can get to it quicker and also so I can bail in case of emergency. Yeah, didn't care for that place so much! Never worked anywhere with security checking the car though, ofcourse, I never turn down an invite to popping my bonnet!
Funny, I had a random search this morning too.
Becky found what she was looking for, and did not ask questions.

Nope. The only problem is you risk the risk of having your vehicle destroyed here, and there isn't much you can do about it. Not everyone gets an "inside" parking pass but I do inspections all over this area so at any given time I may have to be somewhere in a hurry. Besides the magical gate pass that hangs on my rearview mirror I made a little index card with my name and phone number on it, I set that on the dash. Only once did I get a call, and it was to ask me to move the Marauder or they were going to set a crane boom on it. Luckily I was walking off the ship at the time, or they would have moved it with a forklift. The only car that comes close to turning heads like mine is a guy named Chris Miner, head of the Carrier Projects Group, he drives a newer Shelby GT 500 around the yard. It's white, blue racing stripes, big fat tires and rims. Wonder if they'd bolt up to the Marauder....:hmmm:

When I was a kid and we lived in Lombard, we used to ride horses in them forest preserves, great memories. Now I ride Amy and she's from that area, great memories. Sidenote: I bet they eventually find Drew Petersons wife in one of them areas.

Ya never know!

Hey scope it out, you may break the case wide open! Or just end up with a blue barrel full of turds from some construction sites porta pottys. Epic win either way, let us know.

Sounds like a scene from a movie - except the fat half assed rent a cop would have accidentally scratched the crap out of your car with a key ring from his belt while you were talking with the other "gifted genius" and not told you...

Lombard is cool. Great car shows during the summer and a great town. I wish my wife didnt want to move from there.:(

I'm surprised you let them touch the hood. I wouldn't let anyone open the car up but myself.

Is that some kind of role reversal? Usually it's your nards terrorizing everyone else.

I might be missing something about where this event actually happpened, but...
they need to do a random security search of the car. What the hell kind of BS is that? Did they piss all over the 4th Amendment when they were done with your car? I mean, supposing you said no...what could they have done?
It's only happened to me once. I was once pulled by a state trooper for -no kidding - 4mph over the limit. He asked permission to search the vehicle, which I flatly refused (always will, too, because I don't do anything or drive in a manner which would raise suspicion to an officer). After 30 minutes on the stop, a verbal barrage and a visit from his supervisor, I explained that unless there was any further business, I expected to be kicked loose and that I would be filing a complaint with their supervisors. They said they were waiting on the arrival of a K9 (who never arrived, strangely).
Their only argument the whole time was "what have you got to hide?"
I don't have anything to hide. But that's shoddy police work and I don't take kindly to my privacy being invaded. Go harass someone else.
(and for those who know what I do for a living, that story may come as a shock, but I deal with the good cops and the bad cops on a daily basis)

Congrats, you know the Constitution. Now, stop being a prick to someone just trying to do their job. If you were not breaking the law you would not have been stopped. 1 over or 100 over, breaking the speed limit is illegal. Look it up.

once you try to come onto any military base or govt facility you automatically waive your rights and they have freedom to search whenever they want.

It's private property where I work, your vehicle is subject to search, in accordance with all the big signs.

Condition of employment for those of us who carry a Clearence. I don't get it everyday, but the security guards at work are supposed to check a random number of vehicles daily. Kind of like going through the bomb and metal detectors at an airport. You can refuse, but they can also refuse entry.

Yep, they do random searches on outgoing vehicles, too. Most of the guards here are okay, but occasionally they like to let you know they run the gate. One asked me one morning (all pissy like) "How long you been driving through this gate?" I looked at my watch and said "About 7 seconds." I did not make a friend that time.

OK, like I said, I was pretty sure there was more to the story as far as why they "needed" to search your vehicle. Thanks for the clarification.

I do too, but +4 on the speed limit is not really cause to think someone is carrying something illegal or committing any crime other than that of speeding. As far as someone who's just trying to do their job, I do not respond to verbal bullying, nor do I enjoy giving up basic liberties because someone wants to look in my car. That's not being a prick, that's understanding and exercising your rights.
If the guy was truly trying to "do his job", he'd have written me a speeding ticket and sent me on my way. He didn't write me a ticket.

How many drunk drivers and wanted felons do you think are found all over the US everyday because of burnt out headlights? Hundreds. Its called probable cause. You were stopped by a State Trooper for speeding. They deal with drug trafficing on a daily basis, and its usually a red flag if someone denies a request to search. He could have arrested you, placed you in custody, then searched your vehicle. I'd say you were lucky.
Go ask one of the good and bad officers you "deal with" everyday.

He could have arrested you, placed you in custody, then searched your vehicle. Um, no, actually he couldn't have.
First of all, my moving violation was not severe enough for that officer to make an arrest in this case.
Secondly, because he told me he pulled me for +4mph, I figured he didn't have an equipment violation on me. Plus, I keep up with burnt-out headlights and other 'red flag' issues; I'm proud to say that I've yet to have a car pulled over based on its running gear.
Had the officer spotted an equipment violation, I'd have given consent, but in that case he wouldn't have needed it anyway...
In this case, he had nothing, and could therefore do nothing.
