The planet goes through a magnetic flip every 20,000 years or so, and when it happens the core of the planet will cool and obviously when something cools the particles slow down and it gets smaller. The mantle sits on top of the core so it will re-seat as the core does, but the crust of the planet it hard and cannot fall into the earth as easily as the mantle can. There will be tremendous pressure on the crust and will cause earth quakes everywhere and will be unpredictable like when you suck all the air out of a water bottle and it gets crumpled up. That is what will happen to the earth. This change isn't instant but it has been cooling for 2,000 years and we are now seeing the effects like the earth quakes in Haiti and Chile, and now Taiwan, all of them in a 2 month period of time and over 6 points on the Richter scale. As the circumference of the planet gets smaller our rotation speed will increase making our days shorter like when an ice skater pulls their arms in and they spin faster. This therory has been proven by scientists who examined volcanic rocks found in Hawaii that are magnetically charged but unlike most magnets they are positioned to point to the south proving that the planet experiences a magnetic flip every 20,000 years. We have been due for this for 2,000 years. First, the core will slow its rotation down and will cool, letting the rest of the planet retreat into the earth, then everything will stop for 4,000 years while the earth will be torn apart by solar flares that emit from the sun every hour, but are normally reflected my the magnetic field which creats the northern lights. Then the core will slowly heat back up again and the earth will start to rotate, this time in the opposite direction, causing the field to emit from the south pole and changing all compasses. Because the crust of the earth re-seated, when it heats back up it will melt the core and push it back, and because it was fitted for a smaller shape it will slide verry easily and will cause massive continental drift with the tectonic plates. This will happen and sooner than we originally though. We have evidence that it has begun and it will not stop.

Will my toilet water rotate the other way?

Seriously though, I believe we are in for a wake up call.

After the quake in Chile it was reported that the Earth's axis shifted 2 inches and actually shortened the day, albeit imperceptible to us mere mortals.

In the 1950s, ocean-going research vessels recorded puzzling data based on the magnetism of the ocean floor. It was determined that the rock of the ocean floor had alternating bands of embedded iron oxides that pointed north and south. Thus, in 1963, the theory of the reversal of the earth's magnetic field was proposed and it has been a fundamental of earth science since.

Scientists believe that the earth's magnetism is created by slow movements in the liquid outer core, caused by the rotation of the earth. The generation of the earth's magnetic field is a continuous, but variable, process that causes change in not only the intensity of the magnetic field, but also causes the Magnetic North Pole to move as well as the reversal of the earth's entire magnetic field.

The earth's magnetic field has reversed approximately 170 times over the last 100 million years. The intensity of the magnetic field has been decreasing over time since it has been measured and some scientists expect that at the current rate of decline, there may be another magnetic reversal in approximately 2000 years.

That should be enough time to replace all of our compasses.

It's all math and physics...............as usual.................as it should be............

Earth's shifting magnetic core, like the Federal government's crazed deficit spending, does NOT concern me.

I am taking Congress's approach to these problems....I will be long gone before either one impacts me.

That's not good. When the earth is rotating, centrifugal force is trying to throw us off the face of the planet and is counteracting the centripetal force of gravity. Without the rotation, we are going to feel much heavier and could possibly be crushed by the earth's gravitational field.

My wife is right: I do need to go on a diet.

This entire earth cycle thing has been going on for millions of years, none of us are going to live long enough to see any dramatic change take place before 2012.
