hello everyone! im looking into a cowl hood for the MM. i see this place Class Glass performance that sells a 2.5" cowl with a gelcoat finish for $450. my first question is what is the gelcoat finish? does it still have to be primed? does anyone else know any other company that makes a cowl hood for the MM?

Impalaslayer should chime in but I BELIEVE it makes it easier to prep and paint but IDK for sure and I am probably very wrong. I'm not a body guy. I do know you still have to have it painted and everything.

here i am  lol
i bought their first hood, no real complaints except they didnt pack it very good, im sure the packing has improved since though. i also highly recommend using hood pins with this thing, at high speeds i could see it shaking quite a bit. the gel coat is used to create a nice smooth finish on top of the glass, if you didn't gel coat it, it would be a real pain in the as to get it smooth. they spray the gel coat in the mold first then lay glass on top of it and yes it still needs to be primed for good adhesion. classglass also has great customer service. that being said, id give it an over all 8/10 how ever i sold the hood to ctrlraven because i ended up not liking the way it looked.

1 bad merc went thru 2 or 3 hoods this time last year before getting one good enough to work with. IIRC the first one had a busted corner. In the end, although they took blame, I heard they were getting a bit snippy.

I used the Class Glass hood.
We did not use pins and have had no trouble with it despite how violent my car launches.
I have had zero issues from ordering to installation with the hood, although I would recommend swapping the hood props. If you look here on the site, you will find teh correct part number for Autozone and O'Really's has the too.

The actual hinges, or just the gas struts that hold it up? on the website it says to take the gas struts right out

And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.

Your right. I have one on my Marauder as well. Not packed well, my guy had to repair the hood in one place. I do like it though and it is heatextraction functional. I saw yours first and them bought mine. Excellent inthe summer in the Florida heat. You can see the heat leaving the ports.

Once, a LOOOONG time ago, a guy made a custom hood like the Shelby GT500 hood for his MM. But he made it from scratch with a donor hood from some panther of the same year. Imagine this on your MM, pretty much exactly it:

I did something similar with mine. There's a long, detailed thread with lots of pictures around here somewhere. I just wish I could get it re-done in fiberglass, its even heavier than stock. I like having the opening all the way at the back, as well as the shape is more to my liking than the class glass hood.

I'm going to have to get mine repainted, paint is starting to crack in a few spots but at least I'll just be able to take it off and take it to the body shop instead of leaving the car there.

I recieved #2 CG hood. fit and finsh was good. very small scrape on a corner(was a no show spot). I was able to find a local to paint top and the smooth perimator underside for $400. Lady Hawk had her's finished in the ruff area underside to make a all smooth finish(which show's off her sweet KB S/C). the hood strut # shown from advance auto is the one i researched seems to function quite well and fit's correctly.I am not sure but I do have the hood pin's installed on mine, but not feel they have to be set all the time, however it is a nice security feature.

48½" long X 21" (front) / 31" (rear) wide X 3" tall
i really like the way that looks, but your talking to someone who cant to bodywork to save his life lol. would you be interested in making another one?
While I'd done some bodywork, it was forsure amature. Took the hood and scoop to a local body shop that does custom work and had them make it happen. Total co$t was ~$600 ( hood + scoop + bodywork and paint ).
Had it done in Aug'2006 and haven't had any issues.

While not in FL and being NA, I don't experience extreme temperature situations. However, I've actually taken underhood temperature readings with a hand-held laser therometer. With cowl scoop and the addition of an air intake tube heat shield, found that the temperature of the air intake tube and the throttle body was ~110°F cooler. 100mile trip @ 75+MPH
ambient temperature - 85°F
throttle body and air intake tube - 86°F
IAT - 78°F
engine temperature - 190°F
under-side of air intake tube heat shield - 196°FMy set-up ...

Yeah www.ClassGlassPerformance.com the company is located right in Cumberland, MD which is in Western Maryland. If you get one I would drive out there and get it, would only be a few hrs each way but save on shipping and any possible shipping damage.
