I think we would have higher GPA's, if more teachers enjoyed their jobs, and enjoyed teaching, thanks for posting, and kudos to that teacher.

That is one way to get the kids to enjoy learning a bit more instead of ditching class or sleeping through it!

If they enjoy the class and teacher it will go a long way in the long run.

Great post thanks! :hmmm:

You're kidding, right?

GPAs are padded enough already. Lots of large high schools have to share the valedictorian spot between 20+ people. One HS had 52 valedictorians a few years ago, though I don't remember where.

Colleges started the process, by saying that you "must have x GPA" to be considered. So high schools figured out that they could get more kids into colleges if they started padding GPAs.

Our high school removed Ds from the grading scale. It now has A,B,C,F. Why? A kid gets a "D" and they are unable to take outreach courses or community college dual credit courses, as well as being ineligible for sports. So now anything above a 60% is a C, though several teachers have rejected this grading scale and use their own.

Oh, and most teachers enjoy their jobs. They could make much more money in the private sector in most cases. If we could take the politics and fight for control (between the parents and school board, neither of which spend any real time in the classroom) out of the profession, it would be a much more attractive job market. Yes, even given the low salaries.

Then how else are we supposed to make the stupid and/or lazy people feel good?

No, I'm not kidding, you sir are talking about a polluted system, I'm not. Take the graff out of the learning institutions, and all will be better, I'm not the one that doesn't want to give Johnny a "D" when he deserves it, I'm the one that has to help support his stupid ass later in life.

And what I am getting at, is teachers entertaining the kids rather than teaching isn't going to make Johnny a better student. Grades don't necessarily determine the level of work a student does, either.

Either Johnny does the work or he doesn't. That is the piece missing in nearly every argument about education nowadays.

BTW what is "graff?"

graff, (n), also graft, the taking of money dishonestly with city or government business...

Most teachers are so stressed out now a days due to over loaded class rooms the kids end up hating them for the bad attitudes and don't want to learn.

Nothing wrong with a little fun and getting the kids to want to pay attention to you and actualy enjoy the class.

Strange --

What stresses me out isn't the kids. It is the adults - namely admin. and parents. Been teaching for 17+ years and the kids are the best part of the job.

No one can motivate anyone else (not counting force of course, but that is a bit different). Motivation is a personal choice.

I always paid attention more in class when the teacher was easy going, laid back and like to have fun with teaching.

The orchestra sucks but maybe it is early in their concert prep?

Right - you chose to pay attention.

Unless you are saying that your teacher was responsible for your learning.

You know, just like your dentist is responsible for brushing your teeth?

Reminds me of something my History teacher used to say. He'd get pi$$ed off at some knot head and say something like; "Knowledge doesn't come in a bottle or a jug. I can't stick a funnel in your ear and just pour it in! You have to learn!"

Mean, tough, and strict, he was the one teacher you hated all the way through school. Looking back though, he was without a doubt the best. He was also a decorated WW2 Vet and once showed me his collection of Japanese "souvenirs". ;)
