That's your starter. My son's 03 MM made the same noise, new starter solved the problem.

Mine made the same noise at startup, and finally stranded me at Best Buy one day. New starter fixed everything. No more startup noise.

Yeah, ditto even though this post is way to late I'd recommend a gear wrench. I cleaned my starter up and put a nice coating of RTV on him when I changed my transmission. I hoping that will help preserve it.
Landy did the starter that came out look kind of rusted and nasty on the outside? Any holes in the case?

the starter bolts are 10mm on mine.
the starter is in perfect condition.
after trying it multiple times it started, i brough the car back home,it started two more times then not anymore.
offcourse i load tested the battery (ok)
checked fuse 101 (ok) got voltage in and out
checked ignition relay (ok)
ignition switch has voltage in and out
checked fuse #9 (ok) and volts in and out
then i stopped there it was getting too dark.
i will keep troubleshooting tomorrow

its prolly the starter man. my truck did the same thing. i would hit the key a few times and it would spin and start the truck. then luck ran out and it gave up the ghost.

i took it out and installed a new one, then tested the old one, it works fine, i will just keep it for spare.

Could be the solenoid thing next to it. Not sure if you can get that part easily.
