It will be fine. The stock programming is very forgiving in the spark department.

You could probably run 89 all times with no issues, just listen for detonation.
Ford would never let one of their cars leave the plant programmed 'on the edge' for a certain octane.

FYI a Performance tune adds about 4 degrees of timing and still doesnt ping on 93 octane. Ive shoved 6 degrees in once and it still didnt detonate.

With that logic, it is safe to say 89 (at the lowest) will be alright, 91 will definitely be ok....just listen for detonation to confirm.

Never has been a problem for me. My wife sometimes fills her up and ALWAYS forgets to put in primo. Runs no different. No pinging. I still put in premium though.

Currently I have 87 in the tank right now, but that is because the car has not moved since last year - motor runs fine, but as soon as I am done with her its getting high grade.

Read the owners manual and fill up with the minimum octane it says to use.

Sure you can use anything in the tank....... someone even used kerosene....... but you'll have "unpredictable" results..... BOOM! Hello new motor!

HOLY RETARDS BATMAN!!!

That guy is, without a doubt, the craziest MF'r I've ever seen.
Who would sit in a tiny tin can mounted IN FRONT of a heavy jet engine that produces ungodly amounts of thrust and top end speed???

Or be crazy enough to stand next to one as the flag man shown in pic!

I didn't notice that...but, yeah...I hope the flagman has Nomex underwear!

His azz would have been toast if the jet veered a little!

To answer the original poster's question...My car was tuned by Dennis Reinhart. I have run as low as 89 octane in it. When I do, I notice some pinging on large hills if left in highest gear. When I turn OD off, it runs fine. I generally run 91-93.

I've had a performance tune for quite awhile. Back when I was doing the Burnouts Across America Tour, there were times when I couldn't get 93 octane (parts of the Rockies IIRC). I just toned down the way I drove it, except for the burnouts, and everything worked out fine.

I feel sorry for whoever that was. Speaking from my own experience with Kerosene I just needed new plugs and a fuel filter. Set a new personal best the following weeks.

Who had to replace an engine?

I replaced mine because I didn't want a blower on a 99,000 mile engine. Rebuild $5,500, new one from Ford $6,800 or one off this site for $3,000 with zero miles. It was a no brainer since I was thinking long term... a rare thing for me.

Now again who had to replace an engine because of Kerosene?

IMHO, if it's stock and you are just using it as a "driver" it probably wouldn't make much difference if you accidently used 89 once in awhile. If you start doing any mods, or are running it on the strip, 93 is a must. If I remember right, nearly all BMW's, Mercedes, and even most Hondas "require" premium fuel if you read the manual. Nobody runs it in them either.

There is a knock sensor under the intake manifold. This sensor's job is to listen for knocking and modulate the ignition timing and fuel mture if it "hears" inaudable knocking. Unless you run wide open throttle all the time, it is not likely that a lower grade fuel will have any long term effects

Since I'm using the old 2000 ECM, my car does not have this feature. I'd have to agree that the knock sensor should keep your car safe from damage.

I'm in Oklahoma and for the most part 91 is all thats available and I have no issues with DR's tune knocking. Every car I own takes premium and 91 one does fine. When gas was high, I ran 89 with no issues but I didnt try to make it knock either.

MM Owner's manual says 91 Octane minimum. Sure you can probably get away with 89 and maybe even 87 in a pinch ..... but why risk the damage to the engine. The savings just ain't worth it. JMHO.
