I have an offer to get my hands on a 4l80 transmission for my K5. Right now it has a TH700R4 that needs clutches/rebuilding. I was told by the seller this 4l80 is an upgrade/later model of the 700R4.

I have heard of this transmission used in trucks like mine before, but not sure if any mods are required to get it to work. It could just bolt right in with the right transfer case.

Does anyone know anything about these?

I posted on ck5.com too, just so you know.

The responses are better here believe it or not.

Let me know what you know.

Thanks!

My FIL is a retired GM transmission tech - he says the 700R4 evolved into the 460LE. The 480LE is damn near bullet-proof. I've got one in my truck. No problems in 164K miles, but I've never towed with it.

With the 700 and the 460 you shouldn't tow in OD, but he tells me it's OK with the larger 480.

Dom, this may be better answered by Darrin, but the 4L80E is computer-controlled and I believe your 700r4 is not, so I think it would be a lot more work than you want to get into.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner, they are essentially the same, minus the computer control on the 4L80E.

So should I bypass this? I was looking for simple plug and play.
