BFG price increase

Last Thursday I ordered new tires for my MM from Discount Tire here in Dallas. The quoted price was $90 each for the rears, and $98 for the fronts. They came in yesterday, so I went last night for the install. When they pulled it up on the computer, it showed that the price for the fronts had been increased to $148 !!!

Fortunately, they gave 'em to me at the quoted price, but any of you needing tires had better get them soon. Looks like BFG has raised the prices on us.

Once again showing my ignorance, but why would the smaller front tires be more expensive than the larger rear tires?:confused:

The guys at Discount Tire couldn't figure that out either. The front tires are a standard size. The rears are a special size just for our cars. You'd think the rears would be WAY more $$ than the fronts. I just checked their web site, and they show the fronts now at $148.99. The rears still come up as $90.00. Go figure. TireRack.com still has the old prices, $108 and $88 respectively.

to do w/supply and demand. The bigger size tire is most likely more popular and sells more. Therefore their production numbers of that particular size would be greater. That would be my guess.

Will any other tires work?

TripleG, there are a number of posts on here about people who have used different size and different brand tires than the OEM's. What I want to know (and I think I know the answer already) is whether anyone makes the same size tires in another brand. I have searched the internet trying to find the rear size tires in another brand and haven't found a thing. Not that I have anything against the OEM tires, I would just like some options while staying with the same size. Also makes me think that these tires will become hard to find once this car goes out of production.

Let's just say for the sake of arguement that the tires do in fact become difficult to find and no one makes a replacement.

If you pre-purchased a set or two, what would be the proper way to store them so that they wouldn't dry out(?) or whatever happens to tires that sit too long?

Actually they smartened up. Mercury gave us fourtanate souls a full size spare of the same size and make as the front tire..Soo why would anybody in Gods green earth buy a set of all four when he could get away with only buying 3 or one. Think about it.

GodOSpeed, only some of us have the full size spare. The '03 300B's have a smaller spare.

The rears are a special size made by BFG just for Mercury. That's why no one else makes tires in that size. The fronts are a standard size, and several companies make them. Michelin and Continental to name two. They're just about double the cost of the BFG's, or at least they were until BFG raised the price.

I got my tires from the dealer, not the best price out there, but I paid $105 each front and rears. Just another option for some of you.

My parts counter guy always give me a good price as I have been a regular customer for years with many different cars.

Racer, had 2 rears custom ordered --waited a week and got fresh factory tires for $ 90 each at Discount Tires in Hurst last Friday--they commented on the price also--guess I got them just in time--they also searched their data base and couldn't find a 245/55/18 g-rated Z rated tire.

Tire Rack has them at $108 for the fronts and $88 for the rears, which is about $10 more for the fronts than a few weeks ago when I bought a set. NTB will match Tire Rack's price.
