We have a great time during the Kentucky meets. This year was Maker's Mark and Heaven Hill. Usually Mike plans part of the bourbon trial every other year. So if he continues, there won't be a planned outting to a distillery, but that doesn't mean you can't go on your own or with others that don't want to do what the group is doing.

Just picked up a bottle of Maker's 46 from the ABC store today. Looks very nice; but I haven't cracked the seal yet. Also got a bottle of Buffalo Trace too. Ever since the Louisville trip in 2008, I have been enjoying Buffalo Trace. Seems it is now stocked as a regular item here in the local Virginia ABC store. Guess others like it as much as me.
I figured that Maker's 46 was 46% and 92 Proof. Wrong. It's 47% and 94 Proof. Maybe they already had the bottles made before the team tested it out to 47. ;)
Anybody know WHY the 46 designation?

It has to do with the aging process. Most of the Maker's 46 barrels are aged for 5-7yrs. Well, at the end of the aging process, the bourbon is removed from the barrels and some 1" oak staves are put in the barrel before the bourbon is returned to the barrel and left to age an additional 11wks. The staves used in Maker's 46 are called French Oak No.46.
