I am thinking about getting a drum kit. What's the best brand to look for? I was going to buy used and thinking around $400.

Keep in mind I am a beginner so I don't need the best model, but a good brand would be good.

Any suggestions?

I've played drums since '89, had an opportunity to attend a small liberal arts college on a drum scholarship, yada yada. I've been in the game for awhile though it is truly a hobby for me at this point.

Anyway, I subscribe to the notion that it ain't so much the brand of the kit, as it is the heads (tuned properly), cymbals, hardware that go on it.

I just bout a new kit back in '07. It's a brand X with Evans heads, Paiste and Zildjian crashes, a Sabian ride, and a Pearl double-kick pedal. Some of the stuff, I carried over to my new kit (the pedal, the Sabian), but most of the stuff I bought new and added on. It sounds awesome, but that's because I know how to tune drums.

Brands I would buy if I were in the market today:
-Rogers (old stuff, but a lot of the stuff had killer metalflake, and they have a unique sound)
-Gretsch
-ddrum
-Ludwig
-Sonor

Brands I would avoid:
-Pearl (It's like the small-block Chevy motor of drum sets. Too many around. Though I love my Pearl bass pedal!)
-Yamaha

If your learning do everyone around you a favor and get a set of rolland Vdrums. I just got rid of my daughters pearl acoustic set and picked up a TD6V used. Headphones are a beautiful thing!

I do that a lot actually and fear I messed up any drumming potential because I would do the bass with my left foot instead of right.

Get a double bass pedal and use both!
