So I noticed about two weeks ago that the top of the car has 5 or 6 different spots of blisters on it. They range from dime to quarter sized blisters and are pretty bad. Anyone else have this on their cars?

The car does stay outside now but has always been well taken care of. The only conclusion I can come to is not waxing the roof of the car as much, or as much as the rest of the body?

Is there a cheap way of fixing this without having to sand down and repaint the whole top of the car?

I have this issue as well. Just got a chip that is less that the size of a dime, so I am not going to worry until it gets worse. From what I hear, you have to sand the whole roof down to bare metal and start from scratch on the paint job.

My car had the hood and roof re-done, and those are still the two worst areas on the car. I've got plenty of that going on...

My roof blistered and my hood is just fading. The fade is the size of a football though!:mad2:

I started noticing those paint blisters on the roof about a year ago. They have just gotten worse since then. A repaint of the roof may be the only option for a permanent fix.

I hve this issue too. Mostly the roof, a few spots on the hood that are less noticable. It sucks

My roof was repainted just before I bought the car. I just replaced the awful hood. Thursday, the dent buster guy is coming to fix dings. Yes!:banana:

Ugh this makes me sick every time I look at my car since it has under 15k miles! But oh well..crappy paint jobs, what do we expect..

just repaint the roof.So far, I repainted my header panel, front hood, rear bumper, by my friend. My hood was terrible with that BS factory blistering issue shouldve been recalled... There is nothing you can do but sand past all the clear/color/primer until you get bare metal. I still have the factory blistering issue pretty bad on my trunk. Soon Enough that will be the next part I repaint and then comes the roof.

If you paint it part by part in increments the $$ is not an issue at all especially if you have connections to a bodyshop. Just make sure its a good paint shop so you dont have to worry about quality, care, overspray, bubbles,etc.

my roof trunk and hood have that same problem. i hate it but, its been that way since i got it.

my conclusions after stripping/repainting a roof.....

the factory primer was applied. there was two possible problems...1) it was much too thick, or 2) it wasn't flashed fully before the basecoat. The problem you are seeing is that while the primer/basecoat dries, it releases VOC's. Because there was hardened clear on top of this, the "gasses" had nowhere to go. Eventually it blisters the paint.


Your only option is the have the roof stripped, and repainted from scratch. This is the permanant solution. Unfortunately, it's not cheap.

I would NEVER recommend doing it yourself. I have years of experience doing bodywork, and I wouldn't even do it. Expect HOURS of sanding. I put in well over 12 hours in just sanding.

I think the "official" story is that there was leftover solvent in the lines due to incomplete cleaning of them.

I have a ton of chips, blister sports an such on my roof. I just don't look at it anymore.

moi aussi.

had mine stripped and fixed. it was starting to look like someone was shooting through the roof from inside the car. it was really bad.

I think alot of your issues is baking from the sun and general weather. I can't speak for the first year of my cars life, but since '04 my car has spent every sleeping moment in the garage and I don't have any blistering, fading, or rust.

I think you're right. Since I think I only polished/waxed the cars roof like twice over it's life..
