hope no one gets offended by this or anything else but I hope this reminds everyone what the real cost of our freedom is My uncle was a Vietnam vet and I had the greatest respect for them they (I think deserve it more then the new vets which by the way I am 2 tours Iraq) When I came home all I got was thanks and applause which I did appreciate. They sure didn't get that wish I woulda been there then I woulda fixed some of that problem.

Never went to nam myself (Im a Vietnam "Era" vet) but growing up in the sixties, well, it was a strange time. I have real strong memories of when we lived in Hawaii from 68-71 and Tropic Lightning was the big thing at Schofield Barracks. I also remember the evening news on tv every night where they would have the blue stripe for US killed in action and the red stripe for nva kia. Many nights it was around 60-100 US soldiers killed daily but sometimes I remember 200+ guys killed. Every night it was bad. Add to that just ask anybody who was around about 1968 generally. Vietnam (Tet), assasinations, big damn riots everywhere, its hard to believe it actually happened and it seemed like that year would never end. I think nowadays (some) younger folks think it was all Hendrix and dope parties back then.

Yep they just take it for granted (not all) what their ancestors did back in the day to give them what they got now. Personaly I think as soon as you get done with high school everybody should be required to do 2 years of some type of military service. AND I DON'T LIKE THE IDEA OF THE PRES AS COMMANDER IN CHEIF WHEN HE HAS NO MILITARY EXPERIENCE! A requirement to be pres should be at least some service so you at least understand what your in charge of.

Hey, hey, hey... easy with that younger folks! We aren't all ignorant SOB's... I know it was a tough time. Some of us care about our history and those that gave their lives for our country.

Not sure why anyone would get offended. Lots of that seems like some of the Walter Cronkite news footage that we use to see on the TV evening news in the late '60s.
I went in to the US Army in May 1972. The Vietnam War was starting to wind down by that time. Some in my OBC class went to Vietnam. Some didn't. I never made the trip to SE Asia although I am also considered a Vietnam era veteran like Vortex.
If you want to see one of the better movies on the subject, go rent "We Were Soldiers" and watch it on a home theater system with surround sound. It is the true story of the 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division in the Battle of the Ia Drang Valley, November 1965. Mel Gibson does a hell of a job as LTC Hal Moore, the 1/7 Battalion commander. It is based on the book by LTC Hal Moore and reporter Joe Galloway (who was with them) entitled "We Were Soldiers once .... and Young".

I think when they teach kids history in school and the topic of the war comes up they should show this movie and any kid who acts stupid while watching should get sent to after school detention.

If you want to read a compelling book, read "With the Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge. The mini series "The Pacific" was based in part on it. I am a Vietnam veteran and what I went through pales in comparison with what they had to endure.
I agree that every person should have to serve their country in some capacity for at least two years. Don't get me started on our "CIC"!
