One of my other wallet destroying hobbies is home theater. I have a slight obsession with light and sound, so HT definitely plays into both of those.

I actually haven't even touched my system since joining the Navy a year and a half ago, it's all in storage until I get to a permanent duty station. I miss it dearly and can't wait to get her fired up!

I had all of this completed by the age of 22 and it took me about 4 years to complete. I also have approximately 150 Blu-Ray movies, 200 DVD movies, and 10 or so HD-DVDs.

Here's my main system specs:
The Picture:
-Sony KDS50A2020 [50" 1080p]
The Players:
-Sony BDP-S550 [Blu-Ray]
-Toshiba A30 [HD-DVD]
-Onkyo DXC-390 [CD]
The Power:
-Marantz SR6400 [6.1 100WPC Amplifier]
-Monster HTS2600 [Power center]
The Punch:
-Front: PolkAudio RTi 8
-Center: PolkAudio CSi 3
-Surround: PolkAudio RTi 4
-Rear Surround: PolkAudio Monitor 30
-Sub: Dual PolkAudio PSW-505s

I like your TV.

It is interesting in the quality of different music DVD. Some are absolutley horrible and others sound better than their CD.

What interesting is my $250 Turntable sounds better than my mega custom CD player. Many are shocked at the sound from the records vs digital. There are not enough 0's and 1's to replicate music.

I just did a small "upgrade" http://www.motorcitymarauders.com/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif to my stereo/surround sound last year. This is what I wound up with...

Sony Z series 46" LCD
Samsung Blu-ray palyer
Yamaha RX-V863 receiver
Klipsh RF-82's (2) front and (2) rear
Klipsh RC-64 center channel speaker
Klipsh RT-12d powered sub

The Yamaha receiver does upconversion from the cable box, as all my channels are not 1080 yet.

In a 17'X28' room, this thing absolutly will drive you out, my wife hates watching movies with me now. http://www.motorcitymarauders.com/forums/images/smilies/up.gif http://www.motorcitymarauders.com/forums/images/smilies/cool.gif

Thanks, I like the clean look (less means more) especially when you consider you can get better sound quality from some flush mount speakers than bulky tower or bookshelf speakers. I even went the extra step and made backboxes in the attic and double insulated them. Just don't buy coaxial flush mout speakers they sound like poo, look for an off axis set up with a silk dome tweeter. ;)

Interesting, a "bulky tower or bookshelf" is an enclosure designed as an intregal part based on the drivers and crossover. Moving the tower a few inches from the wall can make a dramatic difference in the sound.

Good sound is just as subjective as clean look. What matters is if you are happy with the sound and look.

How Many lumens is the projector, it looks like a 6500 Lumen, maybe a 10K. Either way, sweet set up.

Do you have any ambient lighting at all? I'm actually not a big fan of having it completely dark when I watch movies due to the eye strain.

musclemerc

This is only my opinion I have no intention to insult anyone's A/V system.

Having ambient light in a Theater is essential. We have all been to a commercial theater and if your paying attention the first thing that happens is the lights go dim. When this happens the crowd calms down and pays attention. Now ambient light against the viewing surface is a bad thing and sholud be avoided at all costs, it will distort the image being shown. As far as lumens go you really only need 3000 and under for a perfect picture, anything more than that is a waste. Now if you have a room with alot of ambient light a high lumen projector will be needed to compensate for a washed out image. Every theater i've installed and programmed has had multiple sconce lights, stair lights, or fiber optic ceiling lighting.

Here are a few Theaters from Acoustic Innovations in Miami, FL
I have done alot of business with this theater design firm in the past
Check out the lighting and projector housing.

All lights are remote dimmer switches so IF you would like ambient lighting you can just hit the remote up on notch on the rear set of lights. I don't find much eye strain in the dark. The wife watches the movies I;m more of a music guy I just listen to music in the Pitch black. Wierd I know but I enjoy Listening to the music not looking around will its on.

The projector is a vpl-vw60 haven't looked at the specs since I bought it so not sure the lumens can't remember but it's bright enough to view with the lights on a little.
