I would like to know what Old School Rap to pickup. All I have is N.W.A. Run DMC and The Fat Boys. I know there is a lot more to it than that. Maybe someone has something that shows the link between Rap and Country music. Most don't believe that until they hear this song....

What should I look into guys?

Thanks!

Notorious BIG
Ice Cube
Black Sheep
Tribe Called Quest (Midnight Marauders)

If you have Sirius radio, I suggest you tune into "Backspin" which is Sirius 40 I believe and it will give you some options.

Thank you. Funny how two artists you mentioned were in N.W.A. guess it was a supergroup before anyone knew it.

Now I need to see if Office Space has a soundtrack.

"Momma said knock you out" is not L.L. Cool J's first album, and a lot of the stuff listed is not really old school rap, just older than the stuff that's out there now.

Definitely:

UTFO ("Roxanne, Roxanne" was the first rap song I ever heard, had to be like 1980 or '82)
Whodini(already listed)
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five with Melle Mel
Kurtis Blow(already listed)
Newcleus
Sugar Hill Gang(already listed)
Doug E. Fresh and the E. street crew

Good stuff.
The Roots opened for Wyclef Jean at Bentley College here in MA when I was in college and I drove out to the college excited to see The Roots and Wyclef, but my friend and his girlfriend were both drunk and didn't have much info on the concert, so we missed The Roots! I was PO'ed. Wyclef did a great job though. He interacted with the crowd BIG TIME! I wanted to see the Roots though. Questlove is a great drummer and wanted to see them perform!

True. I liked him just from the songs, had no idea what he (or the band)looked like for the longest time. Then they were on some late night show a couple years back, Sat. Night Live or Letterman, somebody. Anyway, I remember thinking "that drummer is going OFF, man" and it turns out it was the Roots, lol.

This is where my name came from. We were listening to JT Money and my friend said TJ Money because my initials are TJM, so it stuck and is now on my motorcycle helmet! I get compliments on it all the time! Hand painted...

I must be old, because when I look the stuff you posted, I say the same thing!
hahahaha

but -
i was there.

Old stuff as far as 1st gen is actually a small list.

The 2nd gen is when it got big, and then 3rd. gen, exploded.
The **** from 10 years ago is 4th gen, and who knows what the 5th or 6th gen will bring?

In the early days, rap was on par with blues, simple, not a lot of production.

Eventually that escalated into everyone wearing a poofy coat with a bandana and a sideways hat, with bitches and hos and fridges full of forties, lo rider wimpalas, gats and busin' caps.........videos on yo mtv raps 23 hrs a day(which is probably where you saw it)

As kids we were into rap before radio play, before breakin', before beat street, etc.
BTW I have witnesses.....lol
and if tempted may do the windmill
haha

Listen to some older hip hop such as Common (resurrection), GangStarr, Geto Boys, Scarface, Pete Rock, The Pharcyde, A Tribe Called Quest, KRS One, LL cool J. Just to name a few.

Here's my fav Common song it's on resurrection, he put Chicago on the map back then.

There's alot of newer decent hip hop out there too, not just the ******** on the radio.
