409 - Beach Boys
That one is taken to the drags where it really shines, not the street. ;) I forgot who did this song originally. I used to have the original.
If any Beach Boys is about racing in the street it's probably I Get Around... I think.
I forgot about the others, thanks Joe!
I really like Racing In The Street by The Boss, really slow, but sweet.

Sweet. I have a lotta listening to do!
Cake - The Distance
Reluctantly crouched at the starting line,
Engines pumping and thumping in time.
The green light flashes, the flags goes up,
Churning and burning, they yern for the cup.
They deftly manouver and muscle for rank,
Fuel burning fast on an empty tank,
Wreckless and wild they pour thru the turns,
Their prowless is potent and secretly stern.
As they speed thru the finish the flags go down.
The fans get up, and get out of town.
The arena is empty except for one man,
Still driving and striving as fast as he can
The sun has gone down and the moon has come up,
And long ago somebody left with the cup,
But he's driving and striving and hugging the turns,
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns.
He's going the distance.
He's going for speed.
She's all alone, all alone in her time of need.
Because he's racing and pacing and plotting the course,
He's fighting and biting and riding on his horse.
He's going the distance.
Yeah!
No trophy, no flowers, no flash bulbs, no wine.
He's haunted by something he cannot define.
Bowel shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse,
Assail him, impale him with monster truck force.
In his mind he's still driving, still making the grade.
She's hoping time that her memories will fade,
Cause he's racing and pacing and plotting the course,
He's fighting and biting and riding on his horse.
The sun has gone down and the moon has come up,
And long ago somebody left with the cup.
But he's striving and driving and hugging the turns,
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns.
Cause he's going the distance.
He's going for speed.
She's all alone, all alone in her time of need.

Last Kiss
Where, oh where, can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from
Me. She's gone to heaven,
so I've got to be good.
so I can see my baby when i
Leave this world.
We were out on a date in my daddy's car.
We hadn't driven very far.
There in
The road, straight ahead.
A car was stalled, the engine was dead.
I couldn't stop, so I swerved to the right.
I'll never forget the sound that
Night. The screamin tires, the bustin glass.
The painful scream that I heard
last.
Oh where, oh where, can my baby be?
The lord took her away from me.
She's gone
to heaven, so I've got to be good.
So I can see my baby when I
leave this world.
When I woke up the rain was pourin down.
There were people standin all around.
Something warm flowing through my eyes.
But somehow I found my baby that night.
I lifted her head, she looked at me and said.
Hold me darling, just a little
While. I held her close, I kissed her our last kiss.
I found the love that I
knew I had missed.
Well now she's gone. Even though I hold her tight.
I lost my love, my life,
that night.
Oh where, oh where, can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from me.
She's gone
To heaven, so I've got to be good.
So I can see my baby when I leave this
world.

The car was the one-Mark Knopfler
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eugF5hHWA1U
In summer '63 I was staying alive
Hanging at the races, hoping to drive
When they were done with the weekend and loading the cars
I couldn't get a pass so I went to the bar
I'm up in the corner nursing a beer
Who should come laughing and joking in here
But Bobby Brown, the winner of the sports car race
With some friends and a girl, man, she lit up the place
Bobby was a wild boy - one summer
He knocked down a motel wall with a hammer
He'd do anything - one night for a bet
He raced through the cornfields in a Corvette
I thought it's got to be a thrill to be like that
With the beautiful girl and be king of the track
But the truth is when all was said and done
It was his Cobra I wanted - the car was the one
It was his Cobra I wanted - the car was the one
The car was the one -
the car was the one

Charlie Daniels - Uneasy Rider
I was takin a trip out to L.A.
Toolin along in my cheverolet
Tokin on a number and diggin on the radio
Just as I crossed the Mississippi line
I heard that highway start to whine
And I knew that left rear tire was about to blow
Well the spare was flat and I got uptight
Cause there wasn't a filling station in sight
So I just limped on down the shoulder on the rim
I went as far as I could and when I stopped the car
It was right in front of this little bar
Kind of a red-neck lookin joint called the Dew Drop Inn
I stuffed my hair up under my hat
And told the bartender that I had a flat
And would he be kind enough to give me change for a one
There was one thing I was sure proud to see
There wasn't a soul in the place except for him and me
He just looked disgusted and pointed toward the telephone
I called up the station down the road a ways
He said he wasn't very busy today
And he could have somone out there in just about 10 minutes or so
He said," Now, you just stay right where yer at!"
And I didn't bother to tell the darn fool
That I sure as hell didn't have anyplace else to go
So I ordered up a beer and sat down at the bar
When some guy walked in and said, "Who owns this car
With the peace sign, the mag wheels and the four on the floor?"
He looked at me and I damn near died
And I decided that I'd just wait outside
So I laid a dollar on the bar and headed for the door
Just when I wthought I'd get outta there with my skin
These 3 big dudes come strollin in
With one old drunk chick and some fella with green teeth
Now the last thing I wanted was to get into a fight
In Jackson Mississippi on a Saturday night
Especially when there was three of them and only one of me
I was almost to the door when the biggest one
Said, "You tip your hat to this lady, son!"
And when I did, all that hair fell out from underneath
They all started laughin and I felt kinda sick
And I knew I better think of something pretty quick
So I just reached out and kicked old green teeth right in the knee
Now he let out a yell that'd curl yer hair
But before he could move I grabbed me a chair
And said "Now watch him Folks cause he's a fairly dangerous man!"
"You may not know it but this man is a spy.
He's a undercover agent for the FBI
And he's been sent down here to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan!"
He was still bent over holdin on to his knee
But everybody else was looking and listening to me
And I laid it on thicker and heavier as I went
"He's a friend of them long haired, hippy-type, pinko fags!
I betchya he's even got a commie flag
tacked up on the wall inside of his garage."
"He's a snake in the grass, I tell ya guys.
He may look dumb but that's just a disguise,
He's a mastermind in the ways of espionage"
"Would you believe this man has gone as far
As tearing Wallace stickers off the bumpers of cars.
And he voted for George McGovern for President."
They started lookin real suspicious at him
He jumped up and said "Now just wait a minute Jim!
You know he's lying I been living here all of my life!"
"I'm a faithful follower of Brother John Birch
And I belong to the Antioch Baptist Church.
And I aint even got a garage, you can call home and ask my wife!"
Then he started saying somethin bout the way I was dressed
But I didn't wait around to hear the rest
I was too busy moving and hoping I didn't run outta luck
When I hit the door I was making tracks
And they were just taking my car down off the jacks
So I threw the man a twenty and jumped in and fired that mother up
Mario Andretti woulda sure been proud
Of the way I was movin when I passed that crowd
Coming out the door and headed toward me at a trot
Now I guess I should of gone ahead and run
But somehow I just couldn't resist the fun
Of chasing them all just once around the parking lot
I had them all out there steppin and fetchin
Like their heads was on fire and their asses was catchin
then I figgered I had better go ahead and split before the cops got there
When I hit the road I was really wheelin
Had gravel flyin and rubber squeelin
And I didn't slow down till I was almost to Arkansas
I think I'm gonna reroute my trip
I wonder if anybody'd think I'd flipped
If I went to L.A., via Omaha

Hey Little Cobra--The Ripcords
Yes and it was written by a girl. I read a little on that song a few years back saying it had to have been written by a girl because you couldn't take a Cobra outta gear, coast to the line and still win the race... a bit sexist, but I kinda saw the point. That's another track song! :P
Last Kiss wasn't about Street Racing though, it was just about a date that went horribly wrong. It was done by Frank J. Wilson I think in 1964 and was actually the last "true Rock N' Roll" song to chart before The Beatles ruined everything, then again I think America was getting bored with Rock N' Roll. Most of us can only stand something so long, very few can take it over and over. The original Last Kiss was done in 1957 and I have yet to hear the original version.

Lucky you!
I have seen Screeching Weasel when it still kinda was Screeching Weasel, meaning when Jughead was still in the band. Now it's just Ben Weasel and pit musicians... no other original members.
Naked Raygun, yup I have heard them and the guitar player owns a bar called Liars Club less than a mile from me... I think he owns it, might be the Cobra Lounge.
Dillinger 4 sounds famililar, but not sure if they are from Chi-Town or not.
Could you tell me where I can find The Landloard Is a Wanker by The Anti-Nowhere League? I can't even find that song on youtube to listen to.
Finally I mentioned I can't Drive 55 in the first post! :P
