Hi All,

My air bag light is on. I bought a code reader and got B2296. I went to my shop manuals but found they do not include SRS/RCM service data.

Can anyone give me a hand here?

Thanks
Jay

It has been a while, Jay. Here is what is in the Shop manual from Ford:

Restraint System — Impact Sensor Status (Front Impact Severity Sensor Circuit Fault)
or
Restraint System — Impact Sensor Status (Driver Side Impact Sensor Circuit Fault)
or
Restraint System — Impact Sensor Status (Passenger Side Impact Sensor Circuit Fault)

I hope that is a start to what the problem is and a remedy to fix it.

Brian,

It's nice to hear from you. I was wondering if you would be the one to reply. Thank You.

I have to find a manual for srs service to diagnose the problem. The code interpretation gives me a good start.

When my airbag light came on, I took it to the dealer.
I had 2 sensors go out in the side airbag restraint. It took them 2 hrs to diagnose properly. Almost $800 repair covered by extended warranty.

DUH,

I looked in the shop manual index for the fourth time and finally found the srs section.

It seems the car was giving me the basic error code all the time by flashing out code 43 with the air bag light before going to the constant on mode. Code 43 is driver side crash sensor circuit. I don't have a code reader which incorporates the on demand test functions. Those would tell if it is an internal sensor fault or a communication/wiring fault.

So before I take out the seat (the sensor is under the carpet under the front seat) I've ordered a sensor which the local dealer says should be available in 3 business days. I would have probed the wiring first but the manual and buddy consultations strongly advise against that.

If it is not the sensor I think I can safely check the wiring integrity if I disconnect the RCM module first. Any advise on that approach?

Been there the, the sensor is on the side where the seat belt retracts. You put the drivers seat all the way forward, open the rear door pop the little kick plate off, plastic seat belt cover off and there it is. The trick is too disconnect the battery for awhile "hour or so for air bag light" put in new sensor reassemble and you should be good to go. Maybe a 30 min job.;)

BTW old batteries, low voltadge conditions, arcking ect..causes some air bag sencors to fault, just read the code on the dash to see witch one it is. Oh yea sorrry about the two thes he haaa.......

Hi,

I'm really glad you posted. I read the service manual and it says to remove the seat. I would have done that and then eventually found the sensor under the seat belt cover.

Thanks

Hi,

I still don't have the replacement part but I did look at a newer service manual. Apparently Ford had two possible locations for side impact sensors on Marauders. In the B pillar or under the seat.

The manual doesn't tell me which one I have. Probably depends on production date.

HI all,

Thanks for the input. The replaced sensor solved the problem. Mine turned out to be at the bottom of the "B" pillar. I think my build date is 2/03. So any car with a build date of 2/03 or higher should have the sensor in the pillar. Dates before that could have it in the pillar or under the seat.

Glad to hear that you got the problem fixed. We have an Escape in the shop with the same issue but would prove out before starting. It would kick a code if you just put in the key and started it up. Found out it was a bad diode in the alternator.

I wonder who figured out that problem.

I just bought a wrecked 08 Escape Limited so am starting to learn about the SRS system. It's been a long time since I've rebuilt a car and things have changed. This programable module thing might make things a bit difficult.

I can't see there being a Fordescape.net club with quite the same enthusiasm as MM.net

Jay,
Aside from the subjet at hand, there may be a program through Ford for the front condenser/trans oil cooler. Let me know if you want an OASIS report for this vehicle.

Under the center console? I tore a whole car apart but I can't remember where the modules were.

Glad you figured out your issue.

I've had a code 19 on our SB for a while after Ms. D moved the driver's seat forward into her seating position from mine (all the way back). Took it to the dealer for diagnosis and they say it is a bad module under the interior trans tunnel cover. They say the issue is between the driver's seat and the module which didn't make sense the module is bad. Never seen this on this web site as an issue as long as I've been here. Any more info on a code 19 would be appreciated. Ford says the module is obsolete, of course.
