View Full Version : Removing dealer badge?
Can the dealer's badge on the back of my car be removed easily? Will it mess up the paint? Should I have the dealer do it?
Thanks!

khc3,
Most of my cars have been used cars and most of them had the dealer stickers. What I did was to put the old 1600 watt hair dryer on them for a bit and they got gummy enough to peel off. The left over adhesive was a little tenacious however but it came clean.
The Mark VII had faded the paint so much (my 1st NC car) that the paint under the sticker looked new and the rest was washed out by the sun.

I told the salesman to be sure to decontent the sticker from the trunk lid. No free advertising on my car. He did make a point of putting all of my keys on dealer key fobs.

The hair dryer worked fine for my MM too.

Is it a badge of metal or plastic? Or a sticker?
If it is a badge with the double faced tape stuff remove by running a length of fine fishing line back and forth under it like you are cutting it off. Then use a little lighter fluid on the sticky stuff to remove the residue. Wax.
Use lighter fluid on the sticker to remove. Wax.
Used these methods on cars and motorcycles.

I managed to work peel the plastic dealer badge off without difficulty on a hot sunny day and was very happy to be rid of it.

Tell 'um your gonna invoice him $500 a month for advertisement fees for his "name"on your car's rear or he can politely take it off---tell'um you've checked with your lawyer and he said--"let me
know if they don't remove it"-
I did this and it was immediately removed--never had so much fun laughfing on the way home with my window to window grin!!
It's a badge, pretty sure it's plastic, about 4"x1.5". I'll giive it a try with the hair dryer tomorrow.
thanks!

Use a heavilly amped hair dryer or heat gun. Go slow. My dealer sticker is still on. The dealer buys things from me! We must reciprocate financially. Do not get things too hot to the touch. You can burn the paint with a heat gun.

thanks! A hair dryer or heat gun will work. Use a wax and grease remover for the residue.

I pulled the badge off one sunny day,... about 10 car washes later all the residue was gone.
you might want to do this while the car is new,.. so you don't have a goofy off-colored rectangle on the trunk lid.

I hate dealer badges. I always specify I do not want one on the car, and have them write it in the contract.
Many dealers these days have gone to license plate frames which are easy to deal with.

RC,
I also have the purchase agreement state "no dealer advertisements of any kind permissible"...
Cars are not Billboards.
My wife thinks I'm too persnickety about trivial matters...
However, a car Billboard is not a trivial matter !

My car had a hideous sticker on it when I bought it. Luckily, I just grabbed a corner and it just pealed right off. If it were not that easy, I would have had the dealer remove it.

I agree with you, marauderman- If the dealer wants to knock some serious money off the monthly payments, I'll advertise for him, but otherwise, forget the stickers/licence plate frames, etc.
Actually there are people getting paid to have advertising on their cars these days-

Its the mixing them up thats the problem!
As others have said, I insist that there either be no dealer stickers/nameplates/license plate frames on the car, or they pay me several thousand dollars for advertising.
Now, if they make it a practice of drilling holes in sheetmetal and riveting nameplates to the car, then they will be REPLACING the entire body panel.
If it's stuck on, as yours is, just remove with a heat gun or hair dryer. I remove the residue with R&M Pre Cleano wax and grease remover (works great to remove almost anything without damaging paint). This solvent is available at any auto body shop supplier that carries R&M products (the PPG stuff smells awful IMO, but works as well).

WD-40 works wonders on gooey residue from stickers!!;)
There is a dealer in Charlotte who lost my busines forever because they "SCREW" and damn star shaped badge on the rear of the car!!! :mad2: They do this to ensure trade ins later in that no other local dealer will take their car in trade because they have to fix the holes!!!
Disgusting behavior!!! :mad2:

Do not use lighter fluid it is petrolium based and can hurt your paint, use 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner instead. You can get it at any auto parts store.

Let the dealer take it off, that way if anything goes wrong, it's their problem, not yours!!!!
I was lucky I guess. "...we couldn't even think about stickering this thing...".

No sticker here. Dealer put hteir license plate frame with their name on it which is now gone in favor of a MARRAUDER engraved black license plate frame on rear of car.

I've never had a problem with a dealer when requesting the car not be badged.
BTW - for those of you in the Columbus, OH area, those "#1 Ricart" trunk badges from have to be the biggest, most obnoxious badges I've ever seen.

When removing plastic (or metal) stick-ons from the Dealer, be sure to slip a thin piece of cardboard between the paint and the plastic wherever there is a gap. Sometimes when you lift on one corner, the other corner digs into the paint. The cardboard will prevent a paint scratch. LOL.
