I just had a new engine installed. Do I need to baby it for the first 1,000 miles or so?

What kind of engine did you get? Biggest thing is to get the rings seated. Make sure the engine up to operating temp before flooring it. I'd take it a little easy for first 500 miles, but I'm probably harder on cars than most. What did installer/builder/dealer say?

No......

What I'd do is change the oil & filter after about 100 miles. Gets all the assembly / manufacturing debris out. Then oil & filter changes every 5k. During the second oil change I'd get the oil analyzed.

I would make sure and let the motor come up to full operating temperature for the 1st 1K miles.
Cold piston seizure is no joke.

Don't use synthetic oil for the first 1000. Change oil and filter 100, 500, 1k, 3k, then as needed.

Beat then snot out of it from day 1 if you want it to grow up and be as powerful as possible.

Change the oil at 100 miles the regular intervals after that.
Have fun.

Every builder gives their own recommendation which I noticed are a bit different. For the price of oil vs. the engine... I think it's overkill too, but, hey, what do I know.

Here's one engine builders sheet:

That's exactly what I did. No engine problems ever happened. Not even 70,000 miles later!

I didn't do this for my motor swap, but I realize the importance now. I'd do that.

There is no break in period. I was racing in the street the night I got the car back when it had 23 miles on the new engine. Took it to the track two days later with 120 miles on it. It was slow though. 15.7 was my first run, but I got it down to 15.5. A flash and intake later was I down to 14.6. Go out and have fun. Drive it like you normally would.

Would you recommend this procedure for a new car, or is factory assembly "cleaner?"

100 miles? Why?! Overkill imo. 1000 more like it.

I went 250 miles on the break-in oil then changed it to synthetic and ran the car as normal.

drive it how you want it to run. you want it to be lazy? drive like a grandma. you want it to run like a ***** ape? stomp it. just change the oil after a few hundred miles.

A brief WOT run once in a while is good to help the parts seat and mate with each other.

My Aluminator came prefilled with synthetic oil. As do many new cars these days. Motors today have much tighter tolerances than in days gone by. The need for dinosaur oil to allow enough friction went away a long time ago.
Mine had it's 1st break in runs on the dyno:burnout:
1st oil change was after driving it from Atlanta to home at about 1200 miles.

Hey JD13! Change your oil filter asap. I've come to the conclusion that with any new engine, you should run it normally, NOT WOT, for say 10+ miles and change just the filter. Or maybe WOT after it's warmed up to temp, shut it down and change it. Then change oil and filter @ 500. I'm saying this because after 500 miles, I changed my filter and oil. I cut the oil filter apart to inspect it. There was a lot of metal particulates on the filter from typical new engine break in. I also saw the bypass valve which made me realize that if you hit WOT or on cold startups, you can open the bypass valve, which may flush some of those particle through the engine and across bearings, etc. Could be a simple $8 preventive step IMO. :D
