It lasted about a half hour, but it was scary. Sky went black, wind started whipping up and the lightning was constantly flashing. All over my neighborhood are down trees, power lines and a lot of crushed cars.
Heres a vid of what it looked like in the area.

All I can say is - WOW!!! The sidewalk lifted right up!! I'm sure that was tree root-related. Amazing!!!

That is stupid. People who live near tornadoes are stupid. They should all move and not complain about tornadoes. ;)
Seriously, glad you are OK. We hear the above all the time when we have them here in the Midwest. Or I am sure people on the coasts hear it about hurricanes, or in CA they hear about mudslides and fires, etc..
Truth is anywhere you live you face the possibility of disaster, which is my point.
Tornadoes around here are relatively common. I was in my car 2 miles from the EF5 tornado here in 2008 and didn't even know it was a tornado because it was so large - I thought it was just black sky.
As much as I feel bad for the damage victims, nature at work is truly awemose to watch.

I'm there with you. Some stuff is just amazing to see from the scientific aspect and the incredible awesome power of nature.
Hope everyone was okay. It rained here pretty good and wasn't too bad then stopped for 2 hrs and next thing I know a huge flash lit up outside for a good 2-3 seconds and then sound hit, scared my dogs, myself and shook the house so violently several pictures jumped right off the wall.
I would of never imagined the storm would of gotten as worse as it did over NYC but I guess when warm humid air meets slightly colder dry air, just doesn't go well.

Just spoke with my sister who lives in Brooklyn, no damage there. Hope all is well up in NYC for you Paul.

Paul is that you standing on the raised sidewalk with your back to us?
Hope none of your cars were damaged, what a mess, someone call Con-Ed.

True that, anyone remember that video clip of the train that went thru a tornado and LOST, and one of the cars comes slamming into the lead car/engine?
Anything that can lift a house completely off the ground for everyone to look at for a few seconds before it makes toothpicks out of it in mid-air is just mind boggling, I could watch it all day long.

Historically they don't. I grew up in Queens and have had family and friends living there all of my life.
A storm/tornado like last night is NOT statistically normal when compared to the long term data but is becoming more frequent over the short term.

Both my cars are in a underground garage so no damage to anything of mine. My GF's power was knocked out and still is out at the moment. Last night at 5:30 it looked like it was 9pm, the wind picked up and started throwing rain against my windows and then the lightning started with crazy thunder. My air conditioner started vibrating and moving in the sleeve from the wind. On the local expressways the road signs are bent backwards and some are ripped out of the ground. I never seen anything like this in our area.
There are dozens of city workers clearing out the downed trees and debris. Its amazing that in such a short time, that much damage was done.
Im not in any of the pics I posted.

I emphatically deny being anywhere near NYC yesterday.:D
Hope no one was hurt. On a bright note it did create work for some people.

Glad to hear, Paul, that you and Voula are OK. Reminds me of the time I was living on Long Island and Hurricane Gloria came through. Several townships were out of power and water for many weeks.
Anybody remember the ice storms of 1978? I was living in Huntington Station at the time. We spent a few nights in my dad's office building in Roslyn. It was like camping indoors with sleeping bags and getting meals from the diner next door.

Wow Paul that is a lot of destruction. The tree tops being snapped off like that really indicate some pretty high winds. A tornado on Long Island should be a pretty rare event. Weather patterns seem to be shifting considerably. 25 years ago, I don't ever remember too many tornado threats in the Mid-Atlantic --- now they seem to be a regular occurrence. And this one didn't target a trailer park either.

Awesome pics. With so many people so close together, even an EF0 tornado will effect thousands. Some people in places where tornadoes are more common don't seem to understand that.
I was standing in my yard watching that line form and head east (I live in NJ, due south of SI, other side of the bay). The thunder was unreal, like nothing I've ever heard before. That was a dangerous situation being right at quittin time for many people. If it happened about 1/2 hour later, those trees might have been landing on cars as people came home from work.

I lost my power until 1 this afternoon but being it took out 3 Toyota's and 2 Honda's I'll live with it. I don't mind the crushed Bimmer either. :D

Amazing photos Paul! Glad to hear you guys (and your cars) are OK. I was driving home when it hit out here.....just rain and strong wind....but torrential. Literally could not see out of the windshield even with the wipers on super max speed. Very scary stuff!

Paul, you have had nothing, but bad luck lately. Sorry man.
Here's a guy who would have gotten his car damaged if a tree fell on it.

Well the tranny problem was a easy fix and my cars are underground, now as long as nothing catches fire, I should be good to go!

....or one of those ultra rare Alaska tornadoes. I hear you can cut them in two and they'd still be bigger than a Texas tornado:P:D

Wow! I'm glad to know you're okay, you sure don't hear too much about tornado landings out there. Must've been scary to witness nature's destruction first hand instead of watching it on tv.
