Free climbing that 1,700 ft metal pole???....friggin' nuts!

I was freaking out just watching it on my computer monitor!

Wonder how much that thing sways when it gets windy...:hmmm:

Also, how do you determine the service life of those tiny welded metal rungs that he was climbing?

I've been up really high on extension ladders in my day, but that is definitey beyond my comfort level. Over 25' and I get very cautious..........:alone:

They did have safety gear.

I don't go above the 1st floor.

A cousin of mine does that in the Air Force. A couple years ago he was over in Baghdad doing that, he said every once in a while he would hear a "zing" go by, they started climbing there at night with night vision googles. Yep a crazy Cheesehead.

A couple of things free climbing blows, yes, that tower will sway a bit at the top 1-2 feet, not a bad job, guess what it pays?

I like my BORING job just fine. Seems to me almost anything could happen at that height, maybe getting faint. I don't think the helmet would save you.

Do they have parachutes....just in case???

SVT_MERC

No parachutes... just safety harnesses and ropes or cables. I've been up some towers about 100' or so but never up any of the really tall ones. The worst thing is dropping something, not just because you got to get it back somehow, but there are are other workers below and/or spotters that can get hit from falling objects.

Think I heard there was an elevator that gets them to around 1600 feet.

I wonder how often they have to climb the tower? Don't think that this would be a daily thing. And ..... whatever they are getting paid .... it ain't enough. ;)

I like heights, but when I am tied in! I would be scared s***less to "free climb" outside the cage! I got an anxiety attack just watching!

They normally go up and replace the light bulb when that navigation beacon burns out.

My next door neighbor has a Tower Service business, he builds and services radio towers. I watched him and his crew climb towers just to change a light bulb. I do not think he has gone up nearly that high. It hurt me just watching even on the computer screen. Thats Nuts!
