View Full Version : Depressurize fuel system?

I am trying to depressurize the fuel system so I can change the fuel filter. I pulled the fuse but that did nothing. So I was searching the forum and have found nothing to assist me in my search for knowledge. I found all kind of info about how not to break the clips on the line but not how to get the fuel pressure switch to pop.

Thanks in advance for any help.

No need to depressurize. Just change it and wear eye protection.

+2 on that i dont relieve the pressure either. but if you must you can just unplug the connector harness from the switch in the trunk.

I was told that if I didn't depressurize the system I'd loose a good bit of gas.

There is a Schrader valve (looks just like a tire valve) on the fuel rail in top of the engine. Put a rag around it and depress the valve.

Cut the power to the pump - pull fuse or unplug it.
Then start and run the car. It will stall.
The line will depressureize.

That's how I've always done it. You'll still get a little gas squirting out of the fuel line, but only an ounce or two.

I just let mine sit over night before doing the filter.

Here's how I did mine:

Bought filter
Called justbob and asked how to change my filter. He said "Unhook old one" so I did
"Put on new filter" he says, so i did
Spilled gas because I turned old filter on end to try and look down hole
Cursed
Cleaned up gas
Drank a beer

No pulling of fuses or unhooking any wires involved

It often helps to remove the fuel filler cap.

Turn the key off. Repeat a couple of times. Walla...no code.

I left that part out, justbob did in fact tell me to do that. And you can tell by the sound when it is "pumped up" again.

I usually do it after it has set for awhile so the pressure is not at it's peak. Another tip IF the new filter came with rubber caps take the one off the inlet of the new filter and keep it in your hand. Then disconnect the old filter's output and pop the cap on it. Then disconnect the old filter's inlet and quicly pop the new one in. Then you can pop the cap off it's outlet and connect the fuel line. Then you can take the old filter open up your gas cap, hold your finger over the inlet, remove the cap and stick the outlet in the filler and remove your finger. You may need cover, and un-cover the inlet to allow it to drain past the flap without spilling over. That method minimizes the amount of fuel that is spilled and wasted.

Wait till the car & exhaust is cold.
Undo the clip and have a wadded up towel handy to hold against the line when you disconnect it. Some gas will come out, but it's not very much.
