So, a month or two ago, I broke my key off in the ignition. I didn't have a second key for the car. I had the schematics for the ignition relay. And i've always wanted to do a push button start.
So, I did.
But I kicked it up a notch (Bam!)
Not only does the push button start work, but I also made all the positions of the tumbler( ON, ACC) switches on the dash.
I know it looks like doo-doo right now, but thats all I had lying around to mount everything to. I am having a sheet metal box made up to wrap around the center console to make it look more uniform and not sucky.
But what you guys are looking for are pictures.
This is on my 93 MGM by the way.
So.....
Ignition relay before it got devastated:

This is the B4/A4 circuit. The pins are labeled on the switch. These are the two wires needed for the push button start to work. I hooked up my switch to these and manually put the ignition switch into run. I pushed the button and the car fired up. So, if you just want the start engine button, this is what you need.

Backside of the start engine button. This was right I started the car like I mentioned above:

Everything becoming ripped apart:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c393/shadz39/Tank%20Of%20Justice/S8300194.jpg
I had to relocate the radio down about an inch and i had to make room for the start button. It's about 4" long on the backside.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c393/shadz39/Tank%20Of%20Justice/S8300204.jpg
Wrapped everything in electrical tape and conduit to keep it safe and clean. I had to extend all the wiring about 18" from underneath the steering column to the middle of the dash:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c393/shadz39/Tank%20Of%20Justice/S8300203.jpg
Nearing completion:

I ended up changing out a few switches. But this is what is look like right now:

Here's the video from testing all the switches to make sure it worked:

Now, to the next post...

Here's essentially everything I used except for the tumbler and the fuse block:

And a shot of the workspace, just for good measure:

Here is the video of a walk around of my car. It shows the switches being used in their current state:

I know the start button has "For Racing Use Only" on it. I know it's one of those ricer ones from Pep Boys. But does it work? Yes. That's what I needed it to do. So maybe sometime down the road, I'll buy a better button and replace it.
But until then, I'm going to hit my switches and buttons.
And it's my beater. I'm going to have fun with it. Yes!! That's what beaters are for.

I made my 'vette a pushbutton start about 6 years ago after chasing a problem. Still need the key to unlock everything on the column, but turning it all the way forward gets you nowhere, gotta hit the button.

I can also see some "probable cause" going on too. You may, at some point, have to prove to the law that your car is not stolen.

The old one started leaking very badly. So, before I put the new one in, I painted it. Why not?

Just curious, What would prevent someone from NOT being able to start it? Looks like I flick a few switches, hit the button and thats about it.

I do have a 3-way top secret switch.
It's a beater. You're supposed to have fun with it. It's more of a "let's see if I can actually get this to work" type of thing.
I mean, if did this to my Marauder, I would be instantly perma-banned.
But I would never do this to the Marauder.
Ever. I promise.

Agreed. In that case put a chicken on the roof and run some plug leads to the exhaust tips for some pyrotechnics...

I like it. I love beaters because you can do crazy things to them and LEARN AS YOU GO! Instead of making a mistake on a nice car, you use the beater to learn. My friend had a beater and we tricked it out with a black paint job and orange racing stripes, fur dash board, wig wag headlights, camo seats, front and rear seat CB Radios, and a bunch of other stuff. It was fun as hell to trick it out even if it was a POS.

I've always wanted a junker daily drive to do crazy stuff on. Something safe that starts on time every time, but with a body and interior that could benefit from the kind of love only a blow torch and a welding machine can deliver.

Lets face it.
We have all learned on cars like this since we were probably kids! I'm sure we all learned this way. BEATERS!! That's why we can all "know our way around a car" now!
Go for it!
(I do like the chicken on the roof idea!)

Niagara Falls.
We should have a meet at Quaker Steak n Lube on Transit. It's a great place for one.
My car has a little dirt in it. Life Happens.
I see you got your car fixed from ze accident?

I love the beater pics!! Exactly! Learn stuff on a pile of a car, so you don't mess up the good one. That's what I use this one for!!
I do have pics of the first Tank of Justice, if anyone is interested, I'll post them up...

That place is awesome. I'll take it over Hooters any time. Or a strip club for that matter. I have been to the one in Ohio... I need to go back now, and show my wife what the business is! Thanks for reminding me!

I always wanted to mount a 5 H.P. pull starter to the hood of my Escort.... Maybe even glue a can of pepsi to the roof to freak people out on the highway and to stop the tailgating..

I did have a 79 impala 2 door with an electric tape outline of a body on the hood. Sick childhood humor.

I had a primer black '83 Malibu that i bracket raced. Total beater. It had "Don't laugh, your daughter's probably in here." written in marker on the trunk lid. Not so funny now that I have two daughters...

Here's a sampling of beaters I've owned/destroyed...
'88 Bronco Deuce
HAD a 4.5" lift, 33' Goodyear MTR's and true dual exhaust. Was known for dragging the bumper on the apex of hills climbed in 3rd gear, and had the smashed exhaust tips to prove it. The holes in the back gate are from jerk straps snapping and sending hooks flying into the back seat.
http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad21/secretservicemusclecars/beaters001.jpg
1983 Olds Delta 88.
Rattle can flames, huge back tires, duals, and a junk Olds 307 I had to rebuilt 3 times, with a P.A.W. cam in it. Also had a '69 Chevelle 396 Rochester and early 70's non-computer controlled HEI distributor. Drove this beauty to high school in the late 90's.
http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad21/secretservicemusclecars/beaters005.jpg
1987 Isuzu Trooper II
Bought for $200, slammed a clutch in it, took it to Haspin Acres for a weekend of wheelin', and promptly blew the engine. The oil filter fell off. O-F-F. Baseplate still screwed on, no can. I was pissed until the beer started flowin'.
http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad21/secretservicemusclecars/beaters007.jpg

There are many many more beaters under my belt, peppered with a few really nice cars, but man... beaters are fun.

Here's a few pics of my beater.

A friend gave me this '83 F150 back in 2000 and I've hauled 200,000+ lbs of firewood with it since then...without an oil change or air filter.

The battery is held in with weed wacker line. The rust is so bad that the cab isn't attached to the frame anymore. Only gravity, the steering column and brakes lines are keeping it on the truck. Because of that, the floor moves around a lot when driving and it tends to shove my foot into the gas pedal when I hit bumps. The brake booster is shot and the rear brakes don't work. Still runs like a theif though!

I'd post pics of some of the other beaters I've had but they were so bad the pixels wouldn't stick to the camera.
