:cool:The Black Monster has 144 K on it and the original battery. Its made it through 7 winters and I think after the bitter cold in the Northeast last winter I want to replace. I think I'm pressing my luck. Its been good to me but owes me nothing. I was wondering what battery make and model number is the choice of club members for a replacement battery ? Needless to say cold cranking power in the frigid Northeast is important. Thanks in advance to everyone.

I got 91 months (7.5 years) out of the OEM battery. Replaced it with the same type Motorcraft BXT-65-650 650 amp battery with 100 month guarantee. I think it is also offered in a 750 and an 850 amp version with the same form factor (size & shape).
8/9/2010 .... Those of you still running with the original OEM battery may be on borrowed time. Mine gave up the ghost this morning. No prior indication of a problem with starting, etc. The "green" indicator window still showing good to go. Not enough of a charge to crank the car. I figure it was at 91 months (or more) of service use.
Replaced it this afternoon with a Motorcraft BXT-65-650 650 amp battery with 100 month guarantee. That's the Motorcraft replacement; but it doesn't look exactly like the original.
Easy out and easy in. Hardest part was cleaning up the junk that had accumulated in the battery tray.
So if you are still running with the original OEM battery (as I know some still are), you may not get a warning of a problem until your MM just won't start. Mine was fine on Friday and sat this weekend. Dead as a doornail this morning.

Optima Red Top
Three weeks ago I replaced the original battery with a new Motorcraft BXT-65-850 battery. I felt it was cheap insurance with winter approaching.

No sir.
Interstate Megatron Plus MTP-65
1000 CCA 1000CA Reserve 100
Optima Yellow
750CCA 870CA Reserve 100
Both are manufactured by interstate.
Optima is sealed. MTP-65 is wet.
MTP-65 is direct fit no adapter and looks stock.
Opinion = no flame.

From your thread subject I am surprised a well known someone hasn't answered you by saying........."one that works".........carry on...and BTW , all those previously mentioned are all good choices..........
The Marauder has a new looking Super Start, distributed by Ozark Auto Distributors, as long as it cranks no chance I'm replacing it... Generally I buy whatever Sam's Club sells that meets OEM specs , which for '10 has been Energizers mfg'd by Johnson Controls... Replaced the orig Motorcrafts in my '98 MGM(yes I said original), and in my mom's '03 MGM that failed in Sept...
My T-Bird has a Driving Force also mfgd by Johnson and the '69 Fairlane Cobra has a Super Crank mfgd by Exide, both came from Sams and are 3-4 years old... My '93 Lightning has a Die Hard Gold that I swapped from a car I was selling...
BTW that orig battery from my '98 is still holding charge(unbelievable), recently started a couple other cars with it... If all Motorcraft batteries were as long lived as that one, they would be my only choice but six or seven years is generally the fail of about any battery...

Don't really have one except that no one mentioned what i consider to be the best DIRECT FIT battery for our cars. I've used both - so I extol the differences for the asking party.
No sir - means there is no BEST - there is only best for your use/application.
BTW - you can put away the BS flag. Specs are readily available on interstate's site.

Motorcraft 850 CCA - last one lasted 7 years, I had an optima before - the Motorcraft has more CCA.

meh i never said optima was the "best", i said its one of the best, which i stand by, and i listed ca cranking amps, not cca cold cranking amps
Motorcraft BXT 65-650
P.S. - Word of caution, regarding Interstate Megatron batteries, I had one die prematurely after just 2 years, and my brother had one die prematurely after just 2 years. Coincidence? I think not.
Never again.

For those of you who went back with Motorcraft, are they still available with the indicator eye?

Mine doesn't, and seems hard to find, even if they are available?

I've had great luck across many years and cars with MT and MTP. Had one die in the Marauder - they replaced immediately - no questions asked - 3 years ago and counting....

My replacement Motorcraft BXT-650 back in August 2010 doesn't have the indicator eye. Doesn't seem to make much difference anyway. My indicator said "Green" right up until my MM wouldn't start. In fact, I think it still showed "Green" when I pulled it out and replaced it. I suspect that it gets stuck or something. I get a better indication "feel" from how it cranks than from the indicator window.
