OMFG! We are trapped on an ultra luxurious cruise ship with NO POWER!
We are being forced to live without A/C while downing 'comped' drinks till we pass out!
We have nothing to do but lay around on the deck and drink while sunning ourselves!
We can't stuff our fat faces at the buffet until we puke.......we have to eat cold food and snacks!!!
We are so miserable!
When we get back on land (and after we get a full refund AND our free cruise tickets.....for any cruise in the world)
We are going to sue Carnival for the horrible ordeal that we were put through!

Having been on a cruise to Alaska I can sympathise with all the whining done by the passengers. If not for the breath taking scenery of Alaska I would have thrown myself overboard from the sheer boredom and lack of decent food on our ship. Cold sandwiches would have been a 1000% improvement over the 4 star dog food we were expected to eat:puke:. Next time we'll try the train.

SAN DIEGO —Six tug boats pulled the stricken cruise ship Carnival Splendor to shore Thursday morning amid cheers from a waiting crowd, bringing the nearly 4,500 passengers – 196 Canadians among them – and crew closer to freedom after three days of limited food, smelly toilets and dark cabins.

Right you are!

Dang Canadian complainers!

Personally,

I couldn't care less what the "rest of the world"'s opinion of America is.
They can go take a flying leap.

And, to me validating their opinion in any way is a self-defeating attitude that is totally negative and counter-productive.

But if I had paid, and planned for a cruise like that, I'd be pretty pissed too.

Joe, I am with you 110% on this. I do empathize with the people who lost a couple of days of what should have been a very enjoyable and positive experience. My empathy ends with the idea that the passengers were somehow in some sort of danger or that their lives were so unbearable with these conditions that they had to kiss the ground when they returned after an eternity of 4 days...:shake:

Instead of taking a cruise and telling anyone who will listen, how they cruised to far away exotic places, maybe some of these malcontents should take a trip to a part of the world where people would give up an appendage for bottled water, a fully staffed hospital, cold sandwiches and any other creature comfort which was available on that floating cattle car.

At the end of the day, the only real thing these people lost was time, and most were probably taking paid vacation anyway.

Yep,
Those passengers that they interviewed should have said something like:
"It wasn't that bad...we hung out and caught some rays, played cards, talked to each other and actually got to know other passengers."
or
"I actually lost weight from my BIG fat azz!"

What really pisses me off is how the media makes it out to be a horrible life threatening ordeal.

My only complaint would have been "Couldn't they have iced the warm beer?"

Guess I am gonna have to go against the grain here.

Not sure that I would consider Carnival Cruise Lines "Ultra Luxurious"; but a fire on a ship at sea is not something to snicker at..... for any reason. This could have turned into a real disaster of a magnitude greater than the Titanic or of the Lusitania. Fire on a ship is the greatest threat to safety that there is during peacetime. Fortunately, the crew was able to contol the fire before it spread to passenger areas. However, as reported in the news, the fire knocked out the ships propulsion engines AND their diesel service generators that provide power and back-up power for the ship. ALL of this was gone. A ship with NO propulsion and NO electric power is a disaster waiting to happen.

These passengers were MORE than inconvenienced on what should have been an enjoyable vacation. Free cruises and full refunds ARE THE LEAST that Carnival can do to compensate the passengers. Of course, I suspect that more than 1/2 of them will NEVER set foot on a Carnival ship again.

Yep,
Now if you want a really nice enjoyable cruise, we took a WindJammer Cruise.
Only @ 100 passengers and they go to ports and places that are too small and too shallow for the 'cattle car' cruises.
Plus they use sailpower as often as practical, so it is very calm and quiet.
Our entire family took a WindJammer cruise to celebrate our mother's 75th birthday, back in 2004.

Maybe I am still all wet but it seems to me that usually the folks that head for the reporters and cameras are nearly as defective as the ship was. Charlie is right however fire on a ship is huge. I was part of the Marine Detachment on the USS Essex when a hot shot stick flew into parked aircraft at the rear of the Island. We fought to save the ship, were fortunate enough to accomplish that and spent 6 months at Brooklyn Naval Shipyard. Again thanks to the student Nurses of St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing for making me happy to have survived and getting me into and out of every joint in the Village. :D

That said, although being generations to old to appreciate Rap or obsentities in music I laughed out loud. Thanks secret service.

I suspect that the same people that were a major pain in the azz before the fire were those standing in front of the microphones when hauled into port. The hardest hit were those folks neighbors who had so looked forward to them being away for the entire cruise. Dennis

Glad to se this bumped as history repeats itself.

Granted fire is a severe issue, had the boat sunk, I'd understand the outcry

But 4 frickin days where a cruise is adrift at sea leading the news? WTF????

The state of the union was this week
Home fireclosures have dropped by more than have from 367k to under 150k in two years showing signs if rebounding

3 feet of snow fell
And so many more stories

But lets lead with the "tragedy at sea" story

Again they are sleeping on Mattresses, being fed, and at no time once the fire is extinguished is their safety at risk

Sure someone could have a medical issue that the ship is not equipped to deal with, but what did they do when that happened? Air lift

I agree, we whine about waiting 3 hours for a burger on a ship, there's a million kids in Africa that have waited their whole life for a burger

Wow I read through the entire first page and had no idea this thread was from 2010!
We took a behind the scenes tour of a carnival ship last April, there are all kinds of secondary measures like generators and backup engines that can prevent these things from happening, but they all are controlled and monitored by one main hub in the center of the ship. If that goes offline then its a giant pool toy bobbing out in the ocean which is why it drifted 90 miles off course.
The waste on board gets recycled into what they call "grey water", its used for the toilets and cleaning and has a stale nasty odor on its own. Combine that with the horrible diet that you are on while on board makes it even more of a horrid stench.
We stopped at Grand Turk on our cruise and the entire island is full of people off the cruise ship. Well the public men's room backed up and it was that grey water smell combined with waste X100 that I couldn't get within 20ft of the bathroom. I ended up holding it to the point I was in pain so I wouldn't have to step foot in there. That has to be the same smell these people are dealing with but on board the ship. Sure there are far worse things out there to deal with, but when trapped in that environment, its a living hell for those people.

Went on Carnival Destiny last year for honeymoon. It was her last year also, she's now The Sunshine. Not a problem one. For those that say "I won't take a cruise because of this." is like seeing a car crash on TV and saying you'll never get in a car again. As many cruises take place yearly compared to the amount that go wrong it pretty good odds in favor of having a good one. When you do hear of the ones that go wrong they plaster it everywhere and make it out like Hell on earth. With the exception of the Concordia, which was just GROSS negligence and Hell on earth. Not to down play the current disaster. Having been on one and trying to imagine limited food, heat, no facilities I can see where it would be bad. This one turned out to be non life threatening, but still a very bad trip. Just curious though. Since there was no power, if the fire couldn't be contained and they had to be evacuated I'm assuming there is a different power source for the life boats. Correct?

I'm put off by being crammed on a ship with 4 THOUSAND other people, then said ship periodically stops to disgorge these thousands of tourists onto some port city and promptly swamps every business within 5 miles.
All of those "awesome" onboard activities that are always shown in the commercials are signed up for and booked solid within the first hour of getting on the floating cattle car!

Why should I be made to feel guilty about living in a first-world country?

While not everyone that hates the U.S. is a third world country, I still stand by my sentiment that I shouldn't have to feel guilty about living in a first world country because someone doesn't have it as nice as I do. I don't brag about my lifestyle, I just live it, why should I feel bad about that?

On a separate but relevant note, I would most certainly hope that other parts of the world don't judge us purely on what is on our broadcast television; or at least, I would hope that if they do, they wouldn't be surprised or upset when we make sweeping stereotypes about them in the same fashion...

On a separate but relevant note,I would most certainly hope that other parts of the world don't judge us purely on what is on our broadcast television; or at least, I would hope that if they do, they wouldn't be surprised or upset when we make sweeping stereotypes about them in the same fashion...:eek:God I hope not.
If other countries watch American TV I would think they would feel sorry for us as we are all morons like on Jersey Shore or all fat stupid toothless swamp people.

Based on current popular American TV we are a third world country.:shake:

Having the entire ship list to one side, to the point that excrement flowed all over your room, and the carpets... To the point that they were "squishy and brown" and having to dump into buckets and throw it overboard.... No power.... and Not to that all interior rooms would have zero light....

This is why I go Camping!

I'm sure people from other countries get tired of non-stop media coverage about Americans being trapped in "Life & Death" situations on a luxury cruise ship......

Werd...

If I lose power for two days after a storm, winter or summer, we go nuts.

And, our bathrooms still work.

We get upset and feel so wronged (Americans in gereral) when something like this happens because we feel it never should have in the first place. We want so bad to "blame" someone for our hardship. The mind set kicks in "hey it's our vacation how dare this happen" what people should do is help each other and look on the bright side.

BINGO!

I see this constantly in airports whenever there's a flight delay or cancellation, mostly from people that don't travel a lot.

The "blame" response you cited is spot on. Rather than trying to make the best of a bad situation, people act like total asshats.:shake:

The first ship the caught fire in 2010 the Navy brought food to it by helicopter, so why no food drop for the this one? Guess we don't help our own anymore?
