last weekend i started working on my 76 250. ive owned this truck since 06 and its been nothing but great but its been sitting lately and the literally falling apart, time to do something, impy slayer style.

heres how she looked when i bought it back in 06. looked identical up till last week only more rusty

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/HPIM0499.jpg

then a few weeks ago i picked this bad boy up, 94 p-pump 12v :coolman:

going to back it with a ZF5 followed by a np205 thats already in the truck
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_1831.jpg

i rolled it in last week and started tearing it down

picked up this cab today, didnt know it had a frame attached but oh well! allt he rust has been fixed on this so it will save me a ton of time and money. plus it has some stuff inside i can sell to off set its purchase

this is going to be a frame off restomod job done on a working mans budget. i love this truck and it will be the last vehicle i ever sell. i have a serious thing for the dent sides, they are getting pretty rare.

Landy, ive got a ZF5 for it, its a 5 speed manual

Pops, ive got cummins sitting on the shop floor for it. spend about a grand more on it and ill be around 300hp/650tq and still get 20+mpg. i have no interest in a gas motor for this thing, i plan on driving it, not stopping at every gas station. thanks for the offer though

Great looking truck. I love all Ford pickups made before 1980. My old 79 back in the day:

I had to look up "dent side" Ford pickups. Learn something new every day I guess. 73-79's are called that because of that indentation on the trim that runs the length of the side. Im a "dent side" guy and troll CL looking for F-150 short beds and F-250 4x4's like yours..

finally getting back to this, had a gmc that i had to swap engines on which took up my spare time to work on this but now that thats gone i can get back to my truck.

well this was a little more difficult then i expected but still wasn't too bad. i wanted to pull the engine and tranny as a unit but that didnt happen, oh well. the engine is out, ended up having to pull the *****y headers off to do it but w/e, wont have to look at them damn things any more.

messed with the truck for a lil while after work. i had my 360 set on some tires and a bored and some how it tipped over and make i giant oily mess all over. i think the only casualty may have been the PS pump but im not all too worried since it will be quite some time before that motor makes its way back into anything. so i had to clean that mess up first, then i put the engine on a stand so it wouldnt happen again and i can wheel it around outa the way. that involved running out to get bolts and oil dry but oh well.

i then went on to tackle this POS. my only guess is it was a mount for a plow or something. took the old plasma cutter to it, man i love that tool. saved me hours with the die grinder.

Nice project Dave!

What is the CID and the OEM power ratings for that Cummins?

BTW: That 360 will make a nice boat anchor....
bulletproof truck engine, but if you are going to haul around the weight of an FE big block you might as well have some cubes!

the cummins is a 5.9 as well rated at 160/400 but those numbers wont be around for long ;)

Without "going totally crazy"*....what can you get those 5.9 12 valves to produce?

You will definitely love the TORQUE @ 1,500 rpm and the fuel mileage!

* Higher boost, chip/tune, turbo back exhaust upgrade........BTW...can you tell that I don't leave ANYTHING stock?

i think with out going internal i could make 300-350 hp/ god know how much tq

the main reason behind the diesel if for the mileage and easy power. there are a few guys with similar swaps that get mid 20s for mileage and are far from stock. there is no computer on the 12v which is why i went with it, its all mechanical so tuning involves turning a few screws.

you arnt the only one who dont leave nothing stock

i know! even if it gets mid teens i would be totally happy. that would be roughly a 100% increase in fuel economy. i figured, if im going through all this work and going to spend all this money i wana be able to drive it offten. i couldnt afford to drive any gas motor that would make the type of power this thing is gona make.

Nope, not really. The 7.3 is the only one I'd want. You can get a cummins in heavy duty ford btw. Also that is the valve cover cover, this motor has 6 individual valve covers. Pretty clean for 170k eh?

Now WHY did you have to go and get me thinking about such a swap???

:hmmm:.....http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/showthread.php?10411-4BT-Ranger&highlight=Ford+Ranger+swap

Actually, if I was going to do an engine swap for my Ranger it would be to pull the 3.sl0w V6 and drop in a 3.7 DOHC V6 from a wrecked Mustang.

Can you say 28 mpg and 307 HP?.....:D

Right now I'm working on reducing frictional, parasitic and pumping losses from my Ranger in an effort to get the 3.sl0w from 18 mpg to something in the low 20s. For a light 2WD pick-up....this thing's gas mileage SUCKS!
I did a tune up with new platinum plugs & wires and got 1 mpg right there. (old plugs from previous owner had @ .65 gap....)
Just got a set of new 02 sensors that will go in this weekend. I've already put in synthetic engine oil and will flush the transmission and refill it with synthetic ATF as well as putting synthetic gear oil in the differential.
I'm working on a custom electric fan to replace the HUGE 17" belt driven fan as well as a set of UDPs.
Next up is a K&N and a cat-back exhaust.

Like I said....I can't keep anything stock!....:D

well i have been fooling with it when i can during the week, but the cold weather really dosnt motivate me much. last weekend i swapped the adapter plates and pulled off the automatic dodge tranny cooler thing, wont be needing those.

also pulled off the AC compressor which was tougher then anticipated. luckily i didnt need it because it is now destroyed. the 2 upper bolts came out just fine. the lower 2 had mega dissimilar metal corrosion between the ac compressor and bolts. the heads broke off with the impact so i had to grind a slot in the bottom along the bolt and crack it to pieces to get it off. it did not wana give up. oh well, more for the scrap yard! lol.

whats left

while walking around in the bed taking crap out i could hear what sounded like 2 seems of metal creaking together in this area
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_2170.jpg

this would be the reason why

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_2177.jpg

and a few more holes up front

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_2179.jpg

this is either the cause, or the half assed repair
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_2173.jpg

so i will not be using this bed as every single part would need repair, which also means ill be using almost NONE of the original body. i should have started with something better but oh well. any one want a free bed? lol

Can you tack weld in a sheet of decent thickness steel or aluminum over the rotted bed?
It's not like the truck is light anyway.

not worth it, besides i dont do half assed :D

whats cool is all for beds from i belive 69 to 96 mount the same, the only difference is the bed sides. sooooo all i gotta do if find a late model 9th gen which commonly rott above the wheels and put on 73-9 bed sides.

Awww.....
just throw in some plywood sheets, slap some oak strips on top, douse it with shellac and make it look like an old 50s wood bed pick-up.
How about a home-made stake body???....

ive had a weird inner ear infection this past week so i haven't gotten much done but felt good enough to get back to it today. i spent my day off new years eve going to look at what i was told was a good 78 ranger bed but it turned out to be a huge pos so i wasted a total of 5 hours on the road for that.

i stopped by a few yards up close to our other shop about 25 miles from here on the way home to try and find a late model bed, no luck. i must have checked 10 different yards NOTHNG from 73-96, i was kinda shocked. on the way home from there my Dad called a yard literally 5 miles from home and they have about 6-8 beds, go figure. bought a bed off a 87-91 crew cab diesel. they said they would have it pulled off by monday so i should be able to pick it up tomorrow with any luck. im actually gona feel a little bad cutting off the bed sides, they are in pretty good shape with no real rust, oh well.

pulled off the rear bumper and hitch which one would think would only take a bout 10 mins but no. one of the POs decided to bolt and weld the bumper on along with some pos rear cross member. so i had to roll out the plasma cutter and get it all off, still some cleaning to do but im going to wait untill i flip the frame over to cut the rest off, why work upside down?

bolts out, hmm why wont it come off?

my rear disk break brackets came the other day
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_2204.jpg

then i went on to remove what was left of the rubber body mounts. took the sawzall to them and almost threw up when i inhaled the smoke, worst choking smell ive ever smelled.

I wonder why the front mounts were all crapped out and the rears were ok? Road salt or something? Regardless, your project has got me going thru Craigslist alot lately casually checking out for a nice "dentside". My dream one would be a cherry, unmodified 78-79 Bronco but a 76-79 shortbed 4x4 would be just as nice. I sure dont need another vehicle but it could be fun.

i think this truck was def a plow truck at some point. too much rust underneath and not enough on top to match. the front mounts are directly int he line of fire with spray coming off the front tires.

im not a huge fan of short box single cabs but i wouldnt turn away any dent side.

Because you are handy with a plasma cutter and a welder, have you given any thought to boxing the frame's 'C' channels?

I met a guy once that'd done something similar to an '79 Cutlass. I believe he used a mid 80's Dodge Ramcharger chassis under it. When he told me that, I'd assumed it had something to do with getting the wheel base close to stock. Nope. It was off by at least 12 inches. IIRC I was dating his sister at the time. Not sure which one of 'em was the bigger wreck.

Im in the same boat as you, it will not be a show truck anytime in the near future so Im going to save some money where I can so I can get my drivetrain dialed in correctly.

There are a ton of choices from what I have been reading, my truck is a west coast truck so it has little to no major rust so Im not too concerned about totally sealing the frame but if I do seal it this is what I have been told will work very well but I have never used it. Might be worth looking into. What is your budget for this project, finished to your standards?

Nice welds! Those body mounts look identical to the ones on my '83 F-150. The cab isn't even attached to the frame anymore on that rig.

I've the exact same steering wheel sitting here. I pulled mine out of a '78 Ford Fairmont. Your center cap is a bit different though. Where'd you source that one from?

Bonus question (lol); What are you doing with the electrolosis? Are you going to be plating/zinc coating stuff?

my cab was hardly attached, atleast the front. they wheel i got off ebay, its a original ford gt wheel, it was an option in a bunch of stuff as i understand it. wasnt cheap at 225 used but i had to have it.

the electrolosis im just messing around with. i just wanted to see how well it worked. im going to have everything blasted anyway.

thanks man, im anxious to fire it up

go to work on her both days this weekend so heres the run down

went out to finish up the middle cross member today and succeed. although i had to un do some of what i did

i first drilled the old rivet holes out to 1/2" for bolts, then tacked the 2 halfs of the xmember together so they will stay put and not flop around like dead fish.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_2292.jpg

tacked
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_2293.jpg

i had to remove the tabs that i previously welded on because some how they ended up a little short. so i made 4 new ones and bolted them up first this time then welded the x member to them.

new tabs bolted up

little progress tonight, got my new rotors mounted up to my rear hubs. i gotta say the way dana does it is flat out stupid. i duno why they couldnt have just made them like any other drum that slips off the studs. anyway i got em done. i def need new inner bearings, on is sloppy as all hell and the other is really tight.

well ive been spending my latest free time putting new wheel bearing in the rear hubs along with seals. also spent the last few days i had any time re sealing and inspecting my np205. i have to say, either these things are really bullet proof as people say or the odometer on my truck has never been around because it looked brand new inside. i didnt have to replace any bearings at all and only replaces the seals and gaskets. this thing actually wasnt too bad to get apart, not nearly as bad as i expected. i really dont have many pics of it apart, actually none but heres one of it all done and ready for paint more or less (amazing pic i know  ). also my 78-9 250 steering box showed up

back it it again today. got the steering box mount almost finished, just gotta flip the frame over to finish welding it. not gona weld upside down if i dont have to. i also started to finish up my trans x member. i didnt like how it looked so i put some "caps" on it. going to do the same to the 2 parts on the truck as well.

took someone suggestion and welded the bolt heads on the back to make it easier to mount this heavy pig. works like a charm!

been slacking a bit on this but i have be busy trying to get the f100 road worthy

started working on the gas tank mount. the old cab had it in the cab and i really didnt want it there. need all the space i can get. picked up this tank from summit and it fits nicely in between the frame rails. i had to more the rear most cross member back even farther and make a new one for the front of the tank. its a bit heavier then i would have liked to use but we already had it so what the hell use what ya got right? i didnt have any strap material so that will come next time.

also threw the motor back in it to check the clearance on the steering box and it looks like i will be able to get it out with a little wiggling.

I can't believe I missed this thread when it was first posted. I am also a big fan of the '73-'79 Ford Trucks.

i have a 73 f-100 it was my first car. with a 390 and a 4 on the floor me and my friends had a great time with it. that is the one truck i will never sell.

That's pretty cool. My first "car" was a '74 F-100 Ranger XLT with a 390 and a C6.

I'm not going to share any pictures yet, but when I start the restoration process, I will be sure to start up a thread.

so ive been going at this thing almost everyday after work and almost all day today. im really enjoying it lately. so i got just about everything removed from the frame which included 6 old exhaust hangers that i welded on when i did the headers. lets just say im glad i sucked at welding when i put those on because they came off pretty easy. i also finished with up scaling it. i just have to pull the old bump stops off. then i moved on to leaf spring bushings int he frame. they suck balls! :-arrgh i got them out though after 3 hrs.

then this afternoon i rolled the engine out and uses "easy off" oven cleaner. this stuff is the tits! i first got all the loose oil build up and stuff off with a small wire bursh and scraper. i put the cleaner on rinsed with the pressure washer then did it again. it got about 95% of the oil and crap off, i was very impressed.

its been another month already with not much progress on this rig. between trying to get the 79 driveable and work i havent had much time for this. but ive been doing some little stuff when i can.

i ordered new front lift springs, it had 2 inch blocks in the front so i replaced them with these 2in lift springs from skyjacker. supposedly "soft rides" but we will see lol.

so i didnt do hardly anything on this truck for almost 6 months but now im back at it and will be until its finished. im not letting any of my other projects get in my way until this truck is done.

so i painted up the tcase finally, used a color from east wood called spray gray, its supposed to replicate the look of fresh cast iron, i duno but i like how it looks, pretty close.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_3108.jpg

then i drug the sterling in for some surgery. cut the shock mount tabs and the spring perch's off it so i can move them inward for the highboy. i cant weld them up just yet until i know where the pinion needs to be set so this is as far as i can go on the rear axle for now.

i then drug the dana 60 for the front in and went to town on it. its if pretty good shape and came apart really easy. now i have to get a case spreader and pull the carrier out to change the axle seals. i also had to order replacement king pins, these ones could prolly be used but why bother when im doing all this other work, might as well do while im here.

so i FINALLY got to paint my frame today! and the front dif for that matter. i put on 2 coats of rust bullet, a coat of epoxy primer and 2 coats of eastwoods 2k chassis black satin. its a lil more glossy then i thought but it might look different by tomorrow. i think it turned out pretty well for how pitted the frame is.

here it is with rust bullet, i brushed this stuff on, flows out pretty nice. if you have a smooth frame like one from the south or out west i would spray this on and where the frame and dif were smooth you can see some brush strokes. but thats like 5% of this frame so i wasnt worried lol

so stuff is finally going back together. ive been hard at this this thing the past 2 weeks even thought it dont look like much progress, its all very time consuming. the 3inch spring/shackle flip conversion took a good bit of time to figure out. i didn't realized that the new springs were longer then the old 2.5 inch springs so i had to move the front hanger forward and the rear ones a lil farther back to get the centering pin to line up with the center of the wheel well. its all done now and looks like itll work pretty well, should ride good.

i also bolted up the knuckles on the d60 with all new king pins, seals, and bearings. its ready to get fully assembled as soon as i go buy some more parts. got the front springs bolted up, the rear 2 cross members and the one under where the trans will be. im about at the limits of my saw horses LOL, i need some axles under this thing!

my goal was to be a rolling chassis by now but that didnt happen, oh well im not far from it though.

front springs bolted up, these are skyjacker 2inch lift springs

knuckles on the d60, the king pin axle really is an easy axle to work on, no stupid ball joints

finally the shackle flip and 3 inch spring conversion

and finally the sky shackle flip kit and a pic of the angle

i hope to get the gas tank in and the dana under the front of it this week. along with the front body mounts, engine mounts, steering box, shock towers and maybe t case!

so as usual, progress is much slower then i had hoped, oh well its coming together. ive been waiting on some parts too so its not all me being lazy lol. anyway, here we go.

i had to get a new drivers side axle for the front axle because the one that was in it had some good pitting right where the seal would ride and i just didnt wana chance it so i bought a new one along with new ubolts to hold it in place. i also had to get new bottom spring plates as they are different from the ones that held the d44 in place.

as far as the top saddles where the u bolts ride, well i couldnt find any of those for a d60 truck so i had to make some. the ones for the 44 put the u bolts at too much of an angle for them to line up with the bottom plate. i just took a piece of 3 inch wide flat stock that was 3/16s thick and cut a piece that was how long i needed it to be over all (the pass side is a lil smaller then the drivers, IIRC the drivers is 7 and the pass is 6). i then cut 6 more pieces that would leave enough room in between them for the u bolts to sit and hold in place and welded them up. you can see it in the pics, it was pretty easy.

pics of said plates.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_3292.jpg

here they are in place holding the axle up. the bolts are sitting parallel and not on any angle so it looks good too me.

pass side

drivers side
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_3295.jpg

then i set her on the ground, well half of her any way. its nice to see it to this point, makes me want to keep going

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_3302.jpg

since the front end is on its own weight now and the rear is on some jack stands instead of a rickidy old saw horse we went ahead and put the tcase up in place finally.

a note to any one changing the bushings on these. the factory isolators had a metal washer molded into them that lets the nuts compress them evenly. well, the new ones from jbg did not have these built in so you will have to use some big washers instead, along with some regular 9/16ths washers like this

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_3305.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_3306.jpg

and here it is up in place

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_3309.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_3307.jpg

thats where i left it for today. i also broke loose the old tie rod assy from the D44 to use on the 60. the ball joints seem fine so i am going to use it for now as the new assy is quite pricey.

so over the weekend i put the sterling under it and center with the leaf pads unwelded, once i figure pinion angle ill tack them in place and pull the axle out to weld them up for good. the axle looks huge under there compared to the wimpy 60 that came out.

so ive been waiting pretty much the whole month of march waiting for parts. i decided to switch the trans im going to run and go with a ZF5 from a powerstroke instead. this has multiple advantages, bigger clutch (13"), bigger input shaft, close ratio gears, and external slave cyl. only downside was it set me back a princely sum for the remaned unit. oh well itll be better in the end.

heres the new reman powerstroke ZF
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/2012-03-02_15-47-57_319.jpg

this how ever meant i needed a new adapter plate since the bell housing bolt pattern is completely different ont he 2 trannys. so i called up fordcummins and got one coming. i went with the one that used the 6.0 starter. youll also need the spacer shich they failed to tell me i would need, yeah more waiting.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_3462.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_3463.jpg

this meant i needed a new starter also (does it ever end?) so i scored on ebay and got 2 used starters for 35 bucks
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_3461.jpg

i was also waiting for the vailair clutch to come in, this thing was not cheap but its rated for 600hp/1000ftlbs. its also the 13inch upgrade.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_3479.jpg

then my turbo showed up, b&w s363, stock one had some play and what the hell fun is stock anyway?

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_3476.jpg

i needed an adapter since the old turbo was a t3 flange and the new one is a t4, ebay ftw again.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_3473.jpg

here it is just a rough fit, i ended up having to get diff bolts, heads were too big on these ones so i pulled it back off to fire it up incase there was any crap in the exhaus manifold.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_3478.jpg

then came the moment ive been waiting quite some time for, we got it fired up! heres the rig for starting lol

Can't remember if you're done with the front axle ends yet, but I did this on my Jeep last year when I redid the front axle. Should be able to do something similar to the Ford hubs:

http://www.junkyardgenius.com/jeep/hubgrease.html

If you plan to offroad much at all, it saves a fair amount of labor down the road (offroad?)

Nice build. Another 80k miles or so on my 258, I might do a 4bt swap on my CJ.

good idea man, this truck is going to be a tar baby so i wont do it on this one, but i am building another bronco for offroad only use and will probably do this trick.

so im not sure exactly where i left off but here we go.

so i got the trans mounted in the truck, its going to require a new cross member which i started but didnt quite finish yet so no pics of that. since the diesel trans uses an external slave cylinder the one i made before was just too much in the way. ill get pics of the xmember once its done but heres the trans in the truck.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_3643.jpg

couldn't get a real good pic because this is in the way!
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/hi%20boy%20rebuild%20thread/IMG_3631.jpg

unfortunately its only temporary. this new cab i got that was supposed to be "professionally" restored with little to no bondo. well let me just tell you this, if you are going to buy a a cab or body for a project bring a magnet! this cab is a total hack job. i started stripping the primer off to get it read to paint and it just went down hill from there. the moron who welded the floor in did a horrible job and then coated them with silicone!! wtf? theres no way to get all of that out so the paint would never stick because the welds are so porous. rust was already forming in spots once i wire wheeled the silicone off. then theres the cab corners, which look to be over lapped then welded. they were loaded with bondo to smooth it out also. the windshield track was the same thing, total POS. and at the rear of the cab on the bottom seam they replaced it with GALVANIZED sheet metal. :-roll
heres some pics of the ****ty work

so im going to be looking for a new cab at carlisle this upcoming weekend. if i cant come up with anything then i guess ill have to spend alot of time on my original.

so i decided im going be making a flat bed instead of the bed i bought. i think it will just work out better for me since this truck is going to be actually used. this is why i mounted the cab temporarily so i could start building the flat bed. i sitll need to make the headache rack and the drop down for the rear.

I dont know, after all that nice work then decide to make a flatbed? You can find donor 70s Fords with no rust all day long for almost nothing. There are lots of them at every pick n pull I go to and they are on CL. Regardless, chassis looks great and good luck whichever way you go.
