I am cross posting this from Dogster.com. This officer's dog has gone missing, so I am trying to get the word out in hopes that he is found.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On 11/13/10 I was searching a tag alder swamp with Bane. We were searching for a missing dementia patient that had gone missing back in August. At around 2pm I gave Bane a rest. We went back to my patrol car, he got some water and about fifteen minutes to cool off. At 2:15 we went back out searching. After about five minutes he was tangeled up in the tags. (I had him on a 20 ft tracking lead) I dropped the lead to untangle him. About the time I got him free, a deer that had been bedded and was less than five yards from me jumped up and ran directly in front of Bane. Bane gave chase. He was out of sight in about a second and I have not seen him since. I am confident he is not caught up in the woods. The lead is made of nylon. He has eaten them in the past, just for fun. In addition, I had him on the 'dead ring' of the check chain. This means that it is not able to tighten around his neck and he can slip his head out of it. He has done this numerous times in the past so it is not a concern to me. We have searched a huge area, including using some of our other canine teams, a departmental helicoptor (with thermal imaging) and two fixed wing aircraft. we have handed out flyers in a thirty mile radius around where he was last seen. We had two possible sightings of him on 11/15/10 approximately 8 miles south of where I lost him. My home is approximately 65 miles south of where I lost him. I am asking that if anyone responds to search the area, please stay in your cars until after the firearm deer season. It is simply to risky to be in the woods with all of the guns out there. If you wish to drive the area to search for him, the roads between Atlanta, Hillman, Millersberg and Onaway are all within his reach. The state/public land south of 6 Mile Rd. in Presque Isle county is very large and there is a good chance he is out in there somewhere. The news media has been great, but the more publicity we have, the better chance we have of getting him back.

Michigan State Police Canine Unit K9 Bane is trained in narcotics detection, tracking, article searches, LPOP, aggression, handler protection and crowd control. This is just a small part of what he is trained to do. He is my partner and I can't wait to have him back on patrol with me. IF SEEN PLEASE CALL _ 989-734-2204 OR 989-354-4101 - MICHIGAN STATE POLICE.

Not sure how this could happen. All the dogs that I work with on the FEMA, S&R and Law Enforcement teams respond immediatley when the handler (partner) calls them. In the field, I have seen several animals run in front of a dog, but no chase is given.

I am not disbelieving the story, I love my dogs, espically the working dogs I interact with, but ... I dont understand how the dog would continue running if the officer is calling them, espicially considering what this dog is trained to do (narcotics detection, tracking, article searches, LPOP, aggression, handler protection and crowd control). This training took along time to complete and get certified in!

Please forgive me if you disagree. I mean no disrespect, just I do not understand how this could happen.

Thanks!
Anthony

I agree with you 100%. I thought the same thing when I read it. The site that I found it on, Dogster, is pretty reliable. There are rarely any bogus claims on the site. At least from my experience.

If the dog has super intense prey drive I could see the dog giving chase. Sometimes when the dog is locked in a drive you cant break it. no one knows how good the dog was with obedience or how good the handler was. I hope the dog is located and returned to the handler ASAP.
