View Full Version : What year Cobra engine do I need?

Wanna dump more boost and a 150 or so shot of NO2 at the MM this year. Any particular year Cobra engine is best in regards to a direct remove/replacement? If so, any other parts I need?
Thanks.

You want to find a 03-04 cobra shortblock. That would be the cheaper way to go. Also the aluminator 10.1 compression would be a drop in engine, but your looking at 6k.

^^^^^^ True, that; but if he's looking at a new Cobra shortblock, there's a core charge. I think DOOM went that route, may want to PM him.

I thought the 2003-04 cobra motors with automatic came with steel cranks & manual transmisson cobra motors came with forged cranks ?

That was the Mach 1 motor. All 03-04 cobra's are manual. :)

FWIW, it's not the stock block that is the weak point; it's rods and pistons.
IIRC, an OEM block with aftermarket lower end stuff is good for 600+ hp.

Ohhhhhh! The bigger, better bug bit! :D Me too! I'm going stroked BB from MMR next year. I'd get a NEW forged shortblock and have the heads worked, bigger valves, valve job. Definitely get some Comp blower cams, better springs if needed. Do you have a stock carrier in the rear? Trans stock? :D

I'd think long and hard about that. Many MMR horror stories...
See if Modular Performance is still building engines.

+1 on mmr being ****
you want a 03-04 cobra short or long block anything else is filled with the same junk internals you already have unless aftermarket stuff was added of course.
the block is not the weak point by any means. its the rods and pistons that suck. when i get back to the car im picking up an aluminum block and getting a forged rotating assay. dont really need another 80lbs on the front end.

Well, as with ANY business, you only hear the horror stories, never the good ones. The overwhelming majority of satisfied customers don't give any feedback for any service or product. I have an MMR sb that I've been torturing and she's loving it. Up to 7k rpm no probs so far. I respect your knowledge, but, I beg to differ on this one. I think they're back on their game with assembly and warranty. Maybe it's the economy, staff, I don't know. Anyhoo...

let me just say this
others on here gave me warning of a vendor and i did not heed their advise and i got screwed. you might be right about them but who knows. my first dealing with this same vendor was flawless but the second was a nightmare.

No disrespect, but, if you go digging, as I did, You'll find every single big name builder has nightmares. At least every single time I called, they picked up immediately and took the time to speak with me no matter what the question. I'm only posting because I own their product and love it! I've also thrown a 200 shot at her without pulling timing (21deg) and she swallowed it like a hooker on saturday night.

Whenever I replace mine I'll be using a stock 4.6 block, throw in forged rotating assy, freshen up the heads and call it a day.

I got screwed by MMR. I gave my advice to Brian (bcastro) and he didn't listen, ended up having his MMR BB/S rebuilt by somebody else who would do it right. Cost him about an extra year of downtime. It's kind of ignorant to go with a vendor who is further away and has a sketchy reputation rather than one who is closer and has a spotless rep.
PS, I LOVE to say "I told you so", so go right ahead...

Maybe I got lucky because of the fallout. :D I dunno. Lot's of options! Another good one is to find a local engine builder with a good rep and have him assemble something. Peace brothas!

Paul, if you go with any iron block, you'll need press in pivot pins for the chain guides in the front of the block,. Ours (aluminum) are the screw in type.

If you can find a good 03-04 cobra long or short block that is your cheapest route. You will need to get a 8 bolt flex plate if you get something with the forged crank. Performance automatic makes one but you have to get the converter holes redrilled to fit our converters bolt pattern. Ford used to sell a 8 bolt flex plate for the trucks but I think they have messed up the part numbers and I couldn't find the right one last time I looked. It used to be listed in the FRPP catalogue.

i wouldn't say they are THE WIN but for a budget build i would def agree with you. plenty of other better options to go with but there certainly isnt anything WRONG with a cobra sb or lb

The flexplate is still available from FRPP, they dropped it from the catalog for a couple years, but they still stock it. M-6375-H46. I picked one up about 2 months ago, so the number is still current.

i was just making a point that there are MUCH better options out there and that a cobra engine isnt the be all end all engine.

Are they the same size intake & exhaust valves as the marauder ? What cc are the heads ? When you say better breathing do you mean different runners ?
RacerX
12-21-2010, 02:29 PM
The valves are a little taller in the heads, the runner is a bit straighter because of this allowing better flow.
