I want to get myself a set of deep metric 6pt sockets. Now is a great time with all the sales. What are the most common sizes used ?

8MM thru 14MM are the ones I seem to dig for the most when tinkering on the Marauder or Amy's Civic. Especially 10MM and 12MM.
You should get one that goes to 18 or 19. You also use 15 a lot.

3/8 drive set, 8mm-19mm. Get it at Sears, made in USA and shouldn't cost too much.

I have up through 21 mm.... You will need everything from around 7mm all the way up to 21. The front end bolts are rather larger. Such as the caliper bracket bolts etc. You could buy that set and then maybe if you are at a swap meet or something you could pick up larger single deep sockets for cheap. I like having a wide variety of tools, so I am prepared for a job.

Also you can get a set of rachetwrenches from 8mm to 19 mm. They will come very handy at times.
Make sure you get a 18mm even if it means buying one separately... Ford loves that size and apparently anything that would have been 3/4" in std is now 18mm, nothing other than a 23/32" in std will fit... I mention this because a 19mm and 3/4" are same size(or at least you'll never know the difference) and every metric set is probably going to have a 19mm but rarely a 18...

Sears is running a special on Gearwrench brand of these. You get 10 wrenches for the price of 8.
6MM,8MM,10MM,12MM,13MM,14MM,15 MM,16MM,17MM, and 18MM for $40.
Best deal around.

There is a guy I met on eBay that sells me a lot of Craftsman stuff. His prices are great.
Let me know if you are interested and I will send you his info so that you can buy without using eBay and save some coin.

If your not a professional mechanic and don't use your tools to make a living you might want to check out Harbor Freight. Cheap tools ..... cheap price.

Plus lifetime warranty! They are good about letting you exchange if one of their tools breaks! I used a standard socket on an impact gun (i know i know) and cracked it and they took it back no questions asked! Didn't say anything! Just said to go grab one off the shelf and I walked out.

ive done that many times, never broke one though. some times the impact sockets are too fat to fit where ya need em.
i have used harbor freight impact sockets with great success.

They have thicker walls so that can hold you back on some applications.
Don't mess with the cheapo stuff those made in China sockets and wrenches are a good way to make a lot more work for you trying to remove the fastener the cheapo tool rounded off.
If you can afford it get a set of Snap-On flank drive sockets. They can't be beat and will often get the fasteners damaged by the cheapo tools off when others can't.
If you can't stomach the price of the Snap-On go for the Craftsman.
For a deep 3/8" set 8-18 is what you'll use the most but having to 19 is a good idea. Anything larger than 19 you really want 1/2" drive.
Many of the std and metric sockets interchange without issues...
sizes like 8mm & 5/16, 11mm & 7/16, 16mm & 5/8, as well as 19mm & 3/4" can be used interchangeably... Absolute musts are 10, 15, & 18mm, unless you have std sockets in x/32 nothing else will fit...

dont think i would use a metric socket on a standard bolt! thats just asking for trouble they make metric, and standard for a reason.

it really depends on the situation. if its something you know isnt that tight or can get on it well then you can use either really. if you have any doubt it might round strip or w/e, go grab the proper size in a 6pt. you just gotta know when to use what and what you can get away with when

maybe on loose bolts, but on something in a tight space its not worth running the risk of rounding out a bolt that can be removed properly with the right socket
i do agree knowing when to use what is key

+1. So just skip the guessing, and buy both! Since when do men require an excuse to not buy new tools? ;)
And Burt, if you are going to do front end work on our cars, and set of small sockets 5 - 9 mm 1/4" or 3/8" drive (I don't remember the exact size), and a set of hex head (or ball socket) wrenches in the same size is a must. Removing the sway bars, and other parts of the front end requires these. Silly cast aluminum.
Yeah I figured I'd get some flack form the straight laced group but after 44+ years of wrenchin', I know what works and what doesn't... Next time you're taking something loose with a 11mm, try a 7/16"(or any of the others I mentioned earlier) and see if you can tell any difference... Some will tell you a 13mm will work for a 1/2" but you're probably asking for trouble if you do...
Need to get a deteriorated rusty/rounded 9/16" loose??? Beat a 14mm on with a hammer take the busted one back to Sears...
