Compressed or canned air through the air vents once a month may have prevented that. Was it getting hot lately?

Make sure you file a complaint with the manufacturer (even if it's out of warranty) and a also file a complaint with the Consumer Product Safety Commission at: http://www.cpsc.gov/
Those kinds of things happen more often that you think.

From what I've seen, the cooling fan is always in the bottom, along with the vents, which to me is stupid, my wife uses a kitchen cooling rack, to keep it up off the table, or whatever, and it never gets hot, (TWSS), we've tried all kinds of cooling pads, Etc., none work.
