View Full Version : Cross-Country Move

An about a month I'll be moving from NY to CA (~3500 miles), and I've been trying to come up with different ideas on how to execute said move without having to drive the MM that distance.
I have too much stuff to fit in the car, and while I did fine pulling the small U-Haul trailer from SC to NY, I really don't want to do that for this move.
Right now, all I've really been thinking of is a rental truck and a car trailer so I can trailer the MM. The catch is that I don't have nearly enough stuff to even come close to filling a larger truck, so I'd really only be using it to tow the car.
Is this the way to go? Has anyone done it differently? I'm open to any and all ideas. Thanks in advance!

When we moved from NY to Las Vegas, we loaded only what we needed in the car and had a mover store and then ship our belongings to our new home. You can also pack you things in one of those PODS and have it shipped to you in CA.
Driving out in the MM was actually very comfortable and fun. More fun than a UHaul.

Hmm, that might not be a bad idea, and probably cheaper than the truck/trailer route. I was partially trying to avoid the 3500 extra miles on the MM, but you're right, driving it would be a lot more fun than a truck.
I'll look into this as well, thanks for the idea!

I was going to suggest the POD and driving the Marauder as well.
Where in Cali are you moving too?

We had the trunk and back seat loaded down. The car still rode like it was empty. As for the 3,500 miles, I have a little over 130k and it still rides like new.
Enjoy,

Hmmm, I wonder if they'd move it twice. I'd like to pick up everything that I have in storage in Sacramento and then ship everything together to SD. I guess that's something to look into.
The smallest POD is 7x7x8', which is large enough contain everything minus the essentials I'd need to drive it. It says I have to call them to get a quote, I'll have to check it out.

So, a little update. I called PODS and they gave me a quote of $3780.82.
That seems a little outrageous...

I paid a company to move a truck from atlanta to scottsdale, AZ when I moved and then again when I moved back. Cost around $600 but was fully insured and they delivered straight to my house.

Put the MM inside the truck? If it's doable, I'd entertain the idea.

If you can do a DITY move just get the smallest Uhaul you can tow your MM with on a trailer and leave the car empty throw everything in the truck and your good. I just did a DITY move and they will give you more then enough to do this. Just make sure you are gonna have enough weight to get your moneys worth. Got to watch the UHaul trailer though even though they say it will work with your car it may not. I would take your car up there and see before you rent anything. I rented a car carrier for my Jag and then front wouldnt go far enough to get to the wheel tie downs cause the front was too low and its at stock ride height. So I had to unpack everything from that car and switch everything to my wifes car and pull that up and it barely cleared still rubbed the front bumper but she has an 04 Grand Am thats pretty much a get around town car so some scrapes on the bottom was no big deal. You might have to get a tow dolly and to me that just isnt worth it since your rear end will still be spinning might as well just drive it.

You will need a loading dock on both ends, to haul it inside, might not seem hard to find, but you'll be surprised, plus it'll move around in there.
BTW I just moved mine on a trailer, rented from Penske, and they don't allow our cars to be towed on their trailer, I had to say it was a CV LX Sport, and then worried about insurance all the way, after unloading the car to turn in the trailer, I pulled out of the parking lot, and the trailer came off the ball in the road, when the service man showed up he said it happens all the time.

If you are in the military and on PCS orders, let Uncle Sam move the stuff for you and take only what you need immediately in the car and for your first week or two on the ground in San Diego. I moved around quite a bit in 20 years with the US Army including two trips to Germany and I never had a problem with any shipments.

My :twocents:....
Either get movers to move your stuff and drive your MM cross-country as others have already suggested
OR
Find a good transporter and ship your MM to yourself in CA. May be worth the cost to save on wear-and-tear and avoid the potential "breakage" in Okiedokie, Idaho.
Either way, good luck with the move. I hope all goes smoothly.

I recently moved a lot of furniture from NY to MD. I drove up in the MM and rented a Uhaul box truck and car hauler. I loaded the truck and hauled the MM home to MD with zero issues. Would do it again.
