Amazing how it seems to work out, feast or famine. I started a 90 day temp position on Dec 27, was supposed to make the trip to Sterling VA weekly for 4 days at a time. I made the first trip up there and returned home Monday Jan 3... That same day I got a message on my home phone answering machine from the other job I've been waiting for. They notified me my Q security clearance has been granted and they want me to start work on Jan 18th! I sent in my resignation notice to the temp job and offered to work whatever days they want me to from the 7th thru the 17th, haven't heard back from them so maybe I'm done for now. Gotta have my pre-employment physical today.

Congrats, and good luck on the new job, BTW what is a Q level clearance.

Employment here is crazy, most people work for temp agencies, some of them as long as a few years, without the possibility of a permanent position.

.

Q is the civilian equivalent of a military top secret. Required when working in sensitive technologies such as uranium enrichment and gas centrifuges. Takes a long time for the investigation, I interviewed in June, got the job offer in July, submitted the questionnaire for the clearance early August, got interrogated by an investigator early September. They said at that time it would take 4-6 months for the investigation.

When I worked at Boeing, my investigation was nothing like that, we did refits for for several Top Secret Aircraft, and also built Air Force One, but obviously since the Patriot Act things have gotten a lot tighter.

Did you have a Q clearance? Actually most people who I've talked with who have a Q said it took them 6 months to a year, and several of them said it used to take 14 months or more.

The Q clearance is issue by the Department of Energy only. A Top Secret Clearance does not have to be combined with Q. Good luck with your work Brian and hope to meet up with you soon. :burnout:

Actually the exposure I've received from working in nuclear medicine for 25 years is much higher than I'll ever get from the uranium enrichment process. The hazard I'll have to watch out for is UF6, which breaks down to HF when exposed to the moisture in the air. HF dissolves lung tissue, so you won't live long enough to worry about radiation poisoning.
