View Full Version : If it idles long enough...

Twice now, I've let the car sit at idle for ~10 minutes and out of the blue the temp gauge will start screaming up towards H. Both times I've caught it and shut the car off before it got there, but that seems pretty random. I'm talking fast too. From NOT to H would take about 5 seconds if I let it go.
Everything else is fine. Runs at a normal temp when driving, doesn't heat up or anything when at a stop, this has only happened with an extended idle. The 2nd time was a couple of days ago when it was 10 degrees outside, so it's not like it's doing it in the heat.
Ideas?
Thanks in advance.

You have a little air in the cooling system. When above idle, there's enough movement in the coolant to break the air pocket into smaller ones and allow the coolant to move. Burp it!

Thanks for the response. I want to think that's a simple evolution, but is there some kind of procedure to follow for doing that?

Ah, thanks for the link.
Could this also be related to why my heat sometimes blows cooler at low rpm/idle? (Ignoring the fact that my EATC is fuct anyway).

what "Racerx" said throw that mm over your shoulder , and burp the hell out it!

YES! Do it asap! You do not want to overheat our aluminum heads/engines! EATC is an easy fix too! One at a time starting with critical fixes first! ;)

I would think that would make the car heat up right away. It will run all day with no issue as long as I keep driving. The only time this happens is after idling for a while.

Like was said before. You have air in the system. With the car ice cold and the front of the car elevated, open up the bleeder on the crossover tube in front of the alternator. Make sure its full of coolant. Then start the car with it loose. That should get the air pocket out.

Quite simply it could also just be a little low on coolant especially if you haven't done anything coolant related to need burping. First sign of low coolant equalls less or no heat at stops.

I'll give it a look tomorrow. It probably couldn't hurt to give it a burp anyway since I have no idea if anything has been done. I know it's tough for you guys to give me sight-unseen diagnoses, I'll get some more info when it's light out and I can take a look at it. Much appreciated!
