OK....

When you disengage the OD is the car in third without the lock-up on the torque converter or is it in second with the TC locked up???

The reason I ask is it acts strange when you drive around with the OD off....seems like the lock-up still happens??

I talked to Lidio and he said they program the OD to stay out except for above 60 MPH in third gear.....Makes the car much more responsive around town!!!;)

Lidio also said he is working on a programmer for the 04 cars right now!! I'm gonna hold off for now until I see who does what since all I really want is to get rid of the crazy shifting!! :)

The lock-up still functions even with the OD off.

Just want to clear up some thing.

My Marauder chips do not let the converter lock-up at all unless its in Overdrive (4th gear) and over 63mph.
We do play with when overdrive comes on and off at low speeds as well but it's "lock-up" that we disable until 60+ in OD.

Against what all others may or may not believe... this is not detrimental to the trans and makes all AOD-E and 4R70W equipped Fords feel much better around town and at low speeds. It makes them feel like they picked up power with out doing anything to the engine. We've been practicing this on all Electronic lock-up Fords for several years now.

Unless the TCC sol duty cycle is set to 0%, I respectfully suggest unlocking the T/C "around town" is a dis-service. To "program" the T/C for anything but "0% or 100% duty cycle" is contrary to the recomendations of the fella that designed it.

With out trying to sound like a “know-it-all” or coming off “cocky”…
I’ll just say that if what you and your guy are saying is true then I’ve “Dis-Serviced” about 500 very satisfied customers with electronic AOD’s. I’ve been disabling LOCK-UP on Fords at low speeds in 2nd and 3rd gear and delayed it in 4th for a long time now and I’ve yet to see this cause a long or short term failure of any kind to the control solenoids or any thing of that nature that I can think of. Remember that the converter by default cant lock at all in 1st gear so if a guy sits in trafic in “Drive” and barely moves and the converter isn’t given an opportunity to lock… this isn’t good?? I’m sure fluid cant flow through the lock-up passageways any way in 1st gear.

In fact by reducing how often it locks-up. I feel it increases the life of the Torque converter clutch because it simply isn’t as active. And isn’t being slipped and modulated as often during the upshifts, and attempting to lock in the middle of 2nd gear under greater load then when I turn it on at lighter cruise loads in 4th only as the car gets over 60mph! Now torque converter lock up clutch failure I’ve seen lots of on cars and trucks that have no mods at all.

I may not be an engineer or an over thinker on this stuff, but am extremely hands-on and practical about most of it. I’ll argue this one to death. Lock-up at low speeds with little motors in heavy cars/trucks sucks… period!
The factory does this because they have to deal with economy, emissions and the transmission group of engineer’s telling them that the trans will last longer when the converter is locked as soon and as often as possible. That may be true. But in the hands of enthusiasts, these rules don’t always apply. I’ve monitored the trans temps on several MM with blowers with my lack of lock-up tuning methods and never seen the temps go over 210. This is not a problem. My customers notice a difference immediately with what I do at low speeds with out lock-up and seem to like it so far.

Thanks for your practical information on these transmissions. I am an engineer (albeit not a driveline designer) and never completely understood how these trans worked. Your expnlations help. Particularly your experience with measuring actual trans temps under street/strip/WOT applications.

I happen to agree 100% with your comments that the FMC engineers are under direction that is far more fuel economy related than perfromance related. Factory tuning is a compromise at best and I am sure there are lots of little tips that we can use that will enhance our enjoyment factor.

Thanks,

Don

I just tried my car in 1st and it did not "lock-up"!!:D

Shifting to 2nd it did even though the OD switch was off OD??

You know the rest......If you floor it the "lock-up" unlocks and away you go!!;)

Can't wait for the tuner that will allow me to change all of this plus allow for a "return to stock" for any dealer visits!!!:help:
