View Full Version : lowering the marauder?

I want to lower my marauder..I mean as low as possible using stock suspension(no bags or custom control amrs)I've been doing a lot of research and see a lot of people dislike the drop springs and most people end up cutting a coil to a coil and a half, what I wanna know what's the max i can cut off the factory springs. Is coil and a half the limit?. I know how to adjust the air ride. So that's not a problem. I just wanna know will I get more drop from cutting springs or getting the eibachs? Also if any one has pictures of their cars with eibachs, cut springs or anythng along those lines id love to see them
Thank you

How does it ride with the cut coil? Am looking to cut mine as soon as we have good weather, but does it ride firmer, or still feel the same?

I’m not sure how much firmer the ride quality is with just cutting a coil because I did all my suspension upgrades at the same time, new struts and sway bars all around. Doing it all at once was a much firmer ride but I’m not sure how much it would change just cutting a coil out.

I agree, 20" is perfect size for this car, especially with deep lip on the back.
My MM with a cut coil feels exactly the same it did as stock. Also, depending on your coils, each car will have a different amount it will lower with a single coil being cut.

will be cutting my springs this weekend...want at least 1" drop...1 1/2 would be better!...gotta allow for some settling over time cause these are brand new OEM springs...that said does anyone have some suggestions on how much to cut...was gonna do 1 full coil but dont want to waste my time and only drop 1/2 or 3/4 of an inch....Also does anyone know the torq spec for the control arms?...i read you gotta loosen em to allow the car to drop?

Also is it true the control arms need to be loosened and re tourqued to allow the control arm bushings to relieve tension?

No problem man! How long did it take to settle down? IIRC yours sat a little high when it left the shop.

No^
If you have new springs DO NOT anticipate much of a drop. My springs were about 4 years old when I cut one coil and it only dropped 5/8" for a week or two, finally came to rest at an 1" or so.
My steps.
1. Jack, stands, tires off.
2. remove the sway bar upper sway bar nut with wrench
3. remove all bolts from coil spring/ shock
3. loosen upper control arm nuts, move spring out of the way, and then pull the control arm bolts out.
4. Hold the upper CA/caliper/rotor/knuckle with one hand, pry down on lower CA with 2nd hand, wiggle spring out with 3rd hand, then temporarily reinstall atleast one CA bolt to hold assembly.
5. have a smoke
6. disassemble/cut/reassemble.
7. put back together in reverse keeping in mind the top plate with the 3 nuts only fits ONE WAY. Mark it before you take it apart.
8. Test drive like you stole it.
9. Drink beer.
Hope this helps, you can send you paypal donation at anytime.

Thanks for the comments. 2,4, shofast. Love your car. I didn't really like the ride of the eibachs at first, very bouncy. But I got used to it. Took awhile for it to finally settle to get that look.
Tire size is 255/35/20 in the front and 275/40/20 in the rear.

Bob, it seems it didn't change much, or I didn't notice it until I put the stock MM wheels back on it several months later. It sits real nice, not too low, not too much gap between wheel well and tire.
Haven't gotten it aligned though, but I probably only put 400-500 miles on the car since having you do that. And the stock tires are dry rotted to hell, so doesn't matter to me.
I am going to need to do a coolant flush this spring as it's past due, and I will finally be installing a JLT RAI!
I want mine even lower if I can..can I do 2 coils or is 11/2 maxx?
I read it's extremely un-wise to cut more than a coil and a half. And nothing else other than an alignment (to CarFixer's specs) is needed.

It took around 6 to 8 months before my car finally settled down to the way it sits now. My final drop was about 1 1/4" with one coil cut out.

My stock wheels only have about 1/2'' clearance with one coil cut out. I dont think 2 would even be possible to turn without grabbing your fender. I havent seen 1 1/2 coils cut yet but im assuming it would be over a 2" drop and possibly be unable to correct your alignment. Probably not a wise decision.

Thanks for the comments bro, I have always loved the black wheels on your Marauder! Makes it look very aggressive:bows: I have a friend on here that has Eibachs and his bounces a little too much for my taste as well but I do think they have a better feel when taking corners hard.
I have had several different tire sizes on the rear and never really like what I have had but the 275/40 looks amazing I might have to go with that on my next set. Amazing looking Marauder bro, I am trying to make it to the Knott's show in April so if youre going I would love to see it in person:beer:

That won't do squat. Good practice? Probably so, for the bushings, but the weight of your car obviously determines the height of the control arms. Loosening them will not lower the car.

The wheels are TSW Nogaro's 20X8.5 fronts and 20X10 for the rear, I will have to check to see what the offset is. The tires are 255/35's in front and 275/35's in the rear. At the time TSW didnt have a wheel with the correct offset because I was running 285's in the rear so they made a custom offset for me. Took about an extra month but I do believe they have this offset available but from what I am told the Nogaro's are no longer available.

Right now I am running 255/35 in the front and 275/35 in the back. I use to run a 285/30 in the rear and really liked the width but lacked too much side wall leaving the front tire around a 1/2" taller which was hard to notice but always bothered me. I just wish they had a 285/35 available!

I can take some good measurements for you tomorrow if I remember but I know there is plenty. If your looking for a set up close to mine the front wheels have a 2.5" lip and the rear are 3.5" (tsw said they were 3.25 but they measure out at 3.5")

I save this thread for when I was ready to do the lowering which I am doing today have a couple of questions. On step 3, the control arm bolts that you mentioned are those the three bolts at the top of the spring pack or the 2 bolts holding the CA to the frame? To get the spring out do I separate the spindle at the lower control arm?
