GM unveils 550-horsepower Camaro

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- General Motors, the same automaker that's been winning awards with the gasoline-optional Chevrolet Volt, is clearly going after the fossil-fuel crowd with a 550-horsepower version of its Camaro performance coupe unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show Wednesday.
This version of the Camaro will be considerably more powerful -- and probably much more expensive -- than the 426-horsepower Camaro SS that's now available.

"It's the most technically advanced Camaro ever," said Rick Scheidt, head of marketing for Chevrolet, in an announcement, "so we've chosen a name from the most elite and exclusive Camaro in history."
The ZL1 name was last used on an all-aluminum racing engine developed by GM in the late 1960s and installed in just a few 1969 Camaros.
This Camaro ZL1 has the same supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine used in the CTS-V line of Cadillac luxury cars.
The ZL1's bulging hood sports a large pair of air ducts cut into a carbon fiber panel. The front end of the car has what GM calls a "Transformers 3" style bumper, after the movie in which the Camaro plays a starring role.
"Everything about the ZL1's design is directly related to its technology and serious performance, especially aerodynamics," GM vice president for global design Ed Welburn said in the announcement.
The ZL1 will come equipped with a six-speed manual transmission and the same dual-mode exhaust system -- the pipes open up at high engine speeds for better performance -- used in Chevrolet Corvettes (http://money.cnn.com/2010/07/12/autos/corvette_engine_build/index.htm?iid=EL). The car will also have the same "magnetic ride" adjustable suspension system used in the Corvette.
Fuel economy estimates for the Camaro ZL1 are not yet available. The 2011 Camaro SS, powered by a non-supercharged 6.2-liter V8, gets an estimated 24 miles per gallon on the highway and 16 in the city.
While it might seem odd for the same automaker that produces the Chevrolet Volt (http://money.cnn.com/2010/11/08/autos/chevy_volt_long_drive/index.htm?iid=EL) to be unveiling a car like this, it's all part of a larger strategy, said Todd Lassa, a Detroit-based editor for Motor Trend magazine.
"You have to have both," he said, "and you have to look at the competition for this car, and it's the Ford Mustang."
The Mustang comes in a variety of different performance levels, including the 550-horsepower Shelby GT500 (http://money.cnn.com/2009/10/01/autos/mustang_super_snake.fortune/index.htm?iid=EL), and the Camaro has to be prepared to go head-to-head, Lassa.
The ZL1 is a "halo" car that will spark more consumer interest than sales, said Lassa. While pricing hasn't been announced yet, it's almost certain to be the most expensive Camaro available. Ultimately, he said, it will be one of the few models in GM's line-up that will sell in lower number than the Volt. http://i.cdn.turner.com/money/images/bug.gif (http://money.cnn.com/2011/02/09/autos/camaro_zr1/index.htm?iid=RNM#TOP)

I read recently that the Camaro to go against the GT500 was going to be called the Z28 and the ZL1 was going to be a limited car and have close to 700hp and cost just under $100K.

Eh the new Camaro is just a Vauxhall. Like they say on Top Gear...
"All they've done is scratched out Vauxhall and written Chevrolet underneath with crayon."
Funny show.

Screw that turd on wheels. In 2000. GM approved a program through GMMG Inc to build 69 2002 Camaro ZL-1's. The same amount of ZL-1's built that were built in 1969. Much more awesome and true to the 1969's than this new super charged turd. The 2002's had a roll cage , a naturaly aspirated 600hp 575 torque, 427 C5R aluminum racing block. Or you could order the level I or II engine package if you couldn't afford the level III 600hp. Most came with the level III. All came with the upgraded suspension among other items. Z06 brakes. Also could be ordered in ANY color including the original 1969 colors. And all were numbered 1-69.

The 2002's might have a great engine, they still look like a poor mans Ford Probe with crappy paint. As for the new Camaro's, let me go eat some mexican, drop a bieber, take a picture and then post so I can tell you what I think.

seriously though, they have a decent look on the outside, inside is like walking into to KMart, it's tight, uncomfortable, and a little cheap. Then they beef up the engine but they make the car weigh more than Shirley from "What's Happening"

Well they can keep their "Shirley" I'll take my 5.0 and do the Roj, and when I feel like a "Re-Run" I bust out the beast. Rant over

I'm a little partial to the 4th gen Camaros since I had owned a 1997 Camaro SS. All SS options. Very fun car. Wish I had kept it. But I was tired of it being a garage queen.

I can not stand the new Camaros. Even if they had 1000hp. Keep it out of my driveway.

I don't care that it's a Chevy. It's just tiny and cheap feeling. I sat in the rental that Bob and Mary had at MV8( Oh the humanity of that transgression;)) and was sorely let down with the quality or lack there of. I loved my GMC 1500 and I'd still be driving it if it didn't rust away, which I'm sure the Camaros will too in 15 years or so.

Oh man my buddy has a 94. Kinda surprised how quick 0 to 150 is. I have a soft spot for the 4th gen camaros. My buddy's has been sitting in a barn for a couple years now. It's a shame. I hate seeing cars get neglected.
