In lieu of posting in my other gun thread, I figured I would start a new one since this is a bit of an oddity.

After paying the dealer, filling out forms, taking passport photos, getting the county sheriff to sign off on the paperwork, paying the BATFE the $200 for a tax stamp, and waiting 70 days, I finally own my first silencer. For those in the dark, these are 100% legal to own if you follow the proper channels. They actually require less paperwork than when buying a car.

In Europe they sell for $50 and don't require any of this silliness though. They're actually encouraged since they keep "noise pollution" down. But Europe also has some ludicrous self defense laws so it's kind of a trade off...

Anyway, its for one of the AR-15s I've been building since 2009. I can always find some way to improve it... kinda like the marauder! The model of silencer is an AAC M4-2000 6.8 and was worth every bit of what I paid for it. There's still the super sonic crack of the bullet when firing most ammunition, but it's still noticeably quieter than when shooting without the silencer attached. I loaded up some subsonic rounds though, using 11.5gr RL 7 powder to push a 130gr bullet with the gas system turned off, and the results were amazing. There's a bit of a dull, muffled pop, but the loudest thing is the bullet traveling through the air. I'll try and get a video up sometime comparing unsuppressed, suppressed, and suppressed subsonic.

Here are some pictures in the meantime:

Nice! Watch Sons Of Guns on TV? I would love to be one of those machinist'. I had some for .22lr when I was younger. All you could hear was the slap of the bullet hitting the target. (single shot, no possible sound escape).

Nah, I don't watch much TV. I'm familiar with the show though. It's a hot topic of discussion on the gun boards I frequent.

Heh, that would be nice, but I don't have the requisite $10K for the registered auto sear to legally "convert" the rifle. Convert in quotations because technically manufacturing a machine gun without a license is big trouble.

The law sees an auto sear as a machine gun in and of itself though so they can still be used in an semi-automatic rifle without constituting the manufacturing of a machine gun. Basically it's a gun in a gun the way the law sees it. Weird, I know.

They do, Advanced Armament Corp (AAC) at least used to manufacture one specifically for AK type weapons. Red Jacket Arms of "Sons of Guns" fame also makes several suppressors for AK type weapons. You might also check out Gemtech and Yankee Hill Machine as well. Expect to pay $500-800 plus $200 for the requisite tax stamp.
