View Full Version : dynotune req'd after headers?

Many have said that it's best to get a dynotune after longtube headers. What's the deal with this - will I get a CEL of too lean - if the PCM can't get the a/f good enough?
Just looking for some backround info on this. Anyone here get headers and didn't get a dynotune? Thanks.

PM 03mmmonroe, he can give you some background info on this. He had longtubes installed and got a dyno tune; can let you know the pluses and minuses.
I installed S&W longtubes last spring, & drove most of the summer before I had it Dyno tuned, however I took it easy & never went wide open throttle, when I did the tune, my tuner said it was very lean & I could have done a lot of damage if I would have driven it hard, side note's: I use the stock CIA, once he re-tuned it, we then added a 3" pulley & re-tuned, barely pegging my MAF so we added a Mafia mas air extender.
P.s. If just adding the headers (& high flow cats) you should not get any codes, like I said above I drove all summer with no problems, just was not a lot of fun taking it easy.

You are moving more air Eric so it makes sense to add some fuel to the mix. Over the years I've been here most have tuned after going long tubes. You've never tuned IIRC, so you will get a noticeable gain anyway you look at it.

No, you will not get CEL....
Yes, you should get a custom Dyno Tune.
I added as much fuel as I could and pulled a little timing when I put mine on. I would still get a bit of pinging while hot and under heavy load.
Watch it.... Dyno will maximize the new addition.

You don't need a dyno tune but if you want to get the best power out of them you should get it done

I'd play it safe and get a tune.
You could also disconnect the battery and let the PCM relearn.

I have the full kooks setup. No dynotune,no problems. Just a bit slower then I think it could be..... Running 14.1s with a zack
tune, exhaust, cai and slicks.

Have you adjusted the A/F? Prolly running lean if still at stock paramters.

For best performance and safety a tune is required, it doesn't have to be a dyno tune and good reputable shop can email you one. Adding long tube headers does change combustion chamber mixture so better to be safe then sorry.
Got mine tuned RIGHT AFTER the headers went on!

I've heard from 2 different tuners, JDM and Powersurge that headers will actually make your engine run a little richer. Something about the sensors picking up a lean condition and dumping more fuel to compensate. I trust what they say but to get the most out of any mod, you'll need a tune.

My car was running pig rich when I installed the kooks on my n/a mm.
Dennis did a baseline run and it was at 274rwhp then he twicked the a/f and I ended up with 293rwhp.

That is because you added a 3" pulley and your making more boost of course the car will be leaner, if your car is N/A a dyno tune is not always needed, if you are S/C I would say yes, a N/A car runs mid 13's some times in the 14's so do you need to spend 500.00 for a dyno tune for a N/A car I will say no, again you can check your A/F with data logging, but again this is up to the owner, the Marauder tune is so refined there is very little to be gained for a N/A dyno tune, a lot of owners walk away disappointed after a dyno tune hoping to see big gains that were not there, many of the older members here that remember the tuning sessions we had at Team Ford, I saw all this then and it has not changed now, just trying to help and share information.

If you are N/A you will be fine, but for peace of mind check the A/F by data loging the car. I would be glad to tell you how to do this.

The problem for Babbage and I is there are no dyno tuners in our area. He is only in the next county west of me. I had mine done in PA several years ago, 4 1/2 hours away.

Then why dont both of you call me, I can do a conference call and I will take time out of my day and show both of you how to set a configuration file and show you how to data log and I will help you read it.

Thank you for the offer Dennis. Babbage may take you up on it. I had mine chipped and then went to a older SCT tuner with a 4.10 tune on it with similiar mods to mine that I bought from another Member here. Someday I'll take a long ride and have you do it the right way in person.

You can use any ones Xcal 2/3 to do this, you cannot data log with a chip with out a special adapter so if any one around you has a Xcal I can tell you how to do this.

Ive touched nothing tunewise. Do I adjust the A/F on the flash tuner?
Ive always been nervous with that thing lol:lol:

Does anyone here do it themselves with programs like delta force rather than hand-helds?
