The problem with the guy that pulled me over is he wasn't a Ford man. I asked him. He said he was a Chevy guy and doesn't like the Crown Vics.

I put on 35% because I didn't want too dark like 20% and get pulled over for it but didn't want 40% cause it's too light for me. MD tint law is 35% so if I got metered I'd fail with the factory tint in the glass.
As of late MD is giving out $75 fines along with a ERO to have the tint removed.

75% is legal in NY. Basically its 2 shades darker then factory solar tint so at that point I wouldn't even bother. I can drive all over NY without a single problem, I drive through VA once and I get pulled over.

VA General Assembly was even proposing a new law to allow darker tinted windows in the front (35%). I doubt it will pass

Bet your local LEO cars are 20% or less. Hypocrites
I have 10% and never had a problem.
With the tint meter I'm guessing it's around 6%!

Can they still cite me even though I have out of state plates?

They sure can, it doesn’t matter what state you have your car registered in. They can enforce their standards while in that state.

This is true ,i have 30% wanted to go a little darker but was told this is as low a tint i could go legally. These cars look alot better tinted also.

See this doesn't make sense to me. Say some crazy State, say Kentucky decides Dark Toreador Red should be illegal because it is a known fact that these cars are notoriously slow and create a traffic hazard. Are people expected to completely ignore or travel out of their way to get around that State if they have a DTR colored car? I am making the assumption that people driving DTR's would actually even drive into another State, presumably to buy cheaper alcohol that helps them temper their shame for driving a DTR in the first place.:D

You don't need to explain yourself. People know the law, violate it anyhow, then whine when they get caught. A drivers license is a privledge, not a right.

State of Illinois passed a "Legal Tint Law" two year ago, which means up to a certain level tints are legal. City of Chicago say "Just because the state passed that law we still have the right to issue tickets under the old law", and they are.
Local always trump state!

I have 5% in the rear window and 20 on every other. Mines looks pitch black at night. Cops usually don't bother me considering south philly is small. Also I do security work around the city so most of them know my car even if they don't know me. Plus cops here are more so after dealers and shooters rather than tinted windows.:D

+1 ^^^^^ I agree. I see no need or good reason to go so dark on window tint. Am surprised that the fine isn't $500 to $1000 for violators.

I don't know how you guys can see at night, when raining or on really dark cloudy days?. There was tint on my truck when I got it from Oklahoma. I had to take it off because I could barely see out at night in the rain.
Must just be our weather sucks so bad up here in Buffalo.

Put this down under the "I've always wondered ... " category, but is it possible to actually order tinted windows from a car window glass maker? Are there windows that are made-to-order replacements that can be made tinted?
Since its in the "I've always wondered ... " category, I've wondered because tickets are always issued for window applique, so I thought perhaps tinted-but-not-window-film windows are exempt.
I'm not thinking of getting any tints (I had an awful experience with them several years ago), but the question did pop up in my tiny brain.

+1, we had a 4x4 patrol unit thats rear window came from the factory so darkly tinted that it was useless at night. You had to use the mirrors to reverse, get out and look to be sure nothing was directly behind the vehicle. You could barely see the LED bar through the window. I wanted it taken off and was told it couldn't be, it was part of the glass. I didn't order it that way, its the way it came. Damn Chrysler products.

I agree completely! Being active duty military I rarely have the car registered in the state that I am stationed in and it becomes a real PITA trying to figure out what I will and will not get pulled over for. Some cops are a little better about it but I have gotten a ticket for having an aftermarket exhaust in Idaho because they still have an obscure law that states all vehicles will only have OEM exhaust components. I went to court to fight it and lost…

Tint is a must in Florida. I have limo all the way around and 30% on the windshield. If I could go darker on the sides I would but two layers of tint never turn out good. Any ideas to go darker than limo? For those of you who dissagree, with respect, who wants to drive around in a fish bowl looking like the pope with a sin tan. The darkest tint I've seen is limo on factory tinted glass. Too late for that otherwise I'd have it.

Well aside from the fact that our cars do look pretty badass with tint, the main reason I have it on mine is not to look "good", it's a health reason.
I have light skin and am a prime candidate for skin cancer. I never leave home without putting at least 50 SPF all over my face and during the summer my arms too.
The tint reduce UVA/UVB rays and I'm working to get a note/prescription from my doctor. There's a form to fill out on DMV's website to bring to the Dr. office.
Plus, I don't know about the rest of you, but I plan on keeping my MM for years to come. Anyway I can protect my inside from damaging sun rays, I'm all for it. I think of my tint as an investment of sorts. I always use a sun shade for my windshield and so far I haven't see any discoloration on my seats or cracks on the dash from sun's rays.

Whatever floats your boat. Sounds like a gross rationalization to me. Be sure to post up the name of the doctor and his office location so we all can go get those prescriptions for the UVA/UVB. My skin is kinda light too. ;)

Dude if that's the reason than go down to the DMV already, but I have no idea how you can prove your likeliness. If there was no proof I bet everyone that wanted tint would say that. No pun intended, I just don't know why you didn't get legal permission in the first place.

Ah, I actually ran into one of these exemptions a few years ago. Dom, they don't just give them out like candy. A legit doctor is not going to put his/her practice in jeopardy.

I don't like hypocrites so I checked out the laws on it. LE vehicles are exempt from tint laws on the side windows but not the windshield. LEO personal vehicles are not exempt, 90% here do it anyway.
But I think it would be safe to say that 50% of the public in my area has and gets away with illegal tint.
