I am going to a junkyard next week and got the golden key to take whatever I want. :D I wanted to know of there were any vehicles that had 31 spline axles out there and a diff to go with it. Or is there a whole rear end I should see if I can take and ship it back home? Let me know.

Thanks!

Someone may correct me later but an 05 or newer CVPI would have 31 splines and traction lock diff, of you're looking for the MM

If this is true, could this handle up to 500rwhp? Or would it break at 450 like the 29s?

I was wrong 05+ cvpi axles are 31 spline, they should handle as much power as other 31 spline set-ups. Most likely though you would need the whole axle I believe the parking brakes cause problems if you just swap out axles and the diff.

Same differential that the 28 spline units use. 05' and up will have 31 spline axles, some will have a trac loc too.

Can this handle 500rwhp at the track or is this a really dumb idea?

those are the axles you want dom, the mosers suck and have broke many times. brand new they are about 200 a piece.

id grab the whole rear though, it will be easier to swap in and out since you will have to buy a new diff anyway to accommodate the 31s

So take a rear end if I can and swap diffs down the line? Maybe I can just take out the axels. If they are already 31s, what's wrong with the diff that's inside? Not built for the kinda power I am pushing I take it?

im assuming you have a stock rear now with 28s

you cant put the 31s in the 28 carrier, thats like a square peg in a round hole, dont work.

so im saying to just take the whole rearend outa a 05+ cvpi and swap it with yours. it will already have the axles and carrier.

if the car has an open dif id just take the axles from it if you can. you wont want an open diff in the mm

and yes those axles will handle the power

That's exactly what I figured. I thought you said take the whole rear end, but swap diffs. I was thinking "If it's complete with 31s why swap? If I just got the axle's alone (not the whole rear end) this would make sense."

Thanks Dave. I will see what I can get. I hope shipping isn't bad. How much time does this take to do? I wonder if I could do it alone...... probably not...... the first time.

The 31 junkyard axles can handle the power out of a CVPI, but what about the diff inside if I find one complete. Can the diff handle it or would that need to be changed too?

If I took a whole complete rear end out of a 05+ CVPI could I just swap it all and call it a day or will I still need to find a new diff?

Shipping a whole rear axle assay is big bucks. They are very heavy. I've lifted one by myself, I'm guessing 300 pounds. Just pull the 31s if you can find any, that will be tough enough.

Geeze the shipping from FL to IL would probably exceed to cost of just finding one locally.

Find an alcoa drive shaft from a 99 or 2000 cvpi with 3.55s - ship that home ~15 lbs..

It's still fun to look around for things.

Would that stop the vibration issue at 140+? ;)

Question: would installing a Ford 9" rear end work and would it be able to handle high horsepower??Difficulty??worth the effort and cost?

If anyone is local in Houston, I can hook them up with a whole wrecked P71 cheap. Can't part them out but I could sell the whole car for the price of what you are talking about for axles and a carrier.
