I'm torn. If I end up getting a Mudstain, it's going to be one of these two.

Which one would you get? Why?

I have always wanted a GT500, especially now that they have an aluminum block.

But now that I've seen the Laguna Seca BOSS 302....

:hmmm:....I might have to reconsider my "what if" dream car.

Depends on what you plan on doing with the car. If you are going to build it up (lots of power) I'd go with the GT500, if you plan on doing lite mods I'd go with the Boss 302.

And if you plan on doing any road racing then the choice is obvious.

One of the Ford magazines did a test of the new Coyote 5.0 with a blower vs. the 5.4 GT500 engine.
The S/C 5.0 made very similar power to the S/C 5.4 and it made more power on the top end because it can rev to 7,000+ rpm.

Yep, though you can find a nice used GT500 for less than a new 5.0 and have money left over to throw mods at it.

GT500. I know the Boss 302 is all the rage right now, but it's just like the 03/04 Mach 1's. You'll be able to get one for 10 grand in a few years

The GT500 will always be cool and hold its value.

Boss 302 for sure. It is faster around a road course than the Shelby, and its true that the new 302 can make more power with less work done to the engine. Add a supercharger and it will be well into and over 550 HP if that's what you want. Look for articles on this in one of the Mustang magazines. I do believe that the advanced technology of the 5.0 makes it a more powerful contender.

Or 2012, I won't be looking to actually get anything until around September when I get back from deployment.

The idea behind doing this is to have something fun to drive while I throw mod money at the MM. I'd LOVE to supercharge the MM plus whatever else, so I want something to drive while she's down. I also want another 2 door coupe, especially one that gets up and goes.

Can the GT 350 be included of my choices?:)

Not totally out of the question, but I think it's overpriced for what you're getting. I do like the hood though.

Yeah, you're probably right. That Laguna Seca package with the rear seat delete is pretty sexy though. Plus, the black&red color scheme totally makes my shorts tight.

It seems to me with the 5.0 catching up to what the 5.4 can do (even surpassing it by the sound of it), I wonder if Ford will either get rid of the 5.4 in the Mustang line-up entirely? Or overhaul it?

If power and 1/4 mile times are your interest, then get the GT500.

If hitting the corners on a road course or just going for spirited back road drives are your interest, then get the Boss 302.

The Shelby loaded with the PP and glass roof will set you back $56,000.

The Boss 302 with Recaros and diff will cost you $43,000. The Laguna Seca will cost you $48,000.

And the Boss will not be the next 03/04 Mach1, that car was nothing more than the shaker hood, seats, and wheels.

The Boss is completely different than a GT, from suspension, seats, wheels, exhaust, dash, Torsion diff, etc.

Disclaimer - See my sig below why I'm so biased

True, Ford had to do something with the left over 99 - 01 Cobra motors.

Put them in a mustang and call it the Mach1. Put in in a GM and call it a Marauder :flamer:

I'm in no way bashing the Mach1, I'm just saying I think this car (Boss) will hold it's value and be held in higher regard than the 03/04 Mach1. Plus the production of the Boss over a two year program is projected to be half of the production of the two year Mach1 program. 7000 ? vs. 15,000 ?

I hate Mustangs, they are a dime a dozen, which is why I bought the MM instead of a Mustang in the first place.

However, I would like a coupe, and I'd like to stay in the Ford family which limits my options. So, I'd like to either get a limited production model, or the top model (GT500).

I'd be more likely to get the Boss 302 and supercharge it than get a GT500, just because it would make it that much less common. On the other hand, I love the front end and hood of the GT500, plus the bigger motor/charger from the factory is very appealing. I'm having trouble making up my mind. Hell, I might even scrap the whole idea entirely and get something different. It took me nearly a year of car shopping to by the MM, that's just how I do it.

Good thing they're not 99/01 motors or your theory would actually work... different heads, different cams, different pistons, different crankshafts for the autos, different intakes, and for most of the 99/01s, different blocks too. But other than that, all 03/04 motors are leftover 99/01 cobra motors... :D

As for the boss 302 vs gt500 argument, this should sweeten the pot... factory stock boss 302 with drag radials - and the window sticker:

And a slightly modded GT; blower, exhaust, race gas, converter and a few other goodies (stock motor, trans, etc):

Well, since I have one of each (original 1970 Boss 302, and 1969 Shelby GT-500), I am biased. I have recently driven both of the new generations at SAAC-36 in Virginia. If you can get & afford the 2012 Boss 302 Laguna Seca.......buy it. I promise you you will be scared for your life every time you step on the gas pedal.
The 2012 Shelby GT-500 is a robust factory racer. The Boss legauna is an insane, factory made, Saturn-5 Moon rocket.
