I appealed my property taxes about 6 months ago. I knew that I've been paying too much for a long time. Thanks in part to Zillow.com, I could see the value of my home compared to my neighbors, and exactly what everyone pays in taxes. If you've never checked it out before, it's a great tool.

So today, I finally got a letter from the Board of Review that my taxes are going down 17%, which comes to $1000 or $83/month on my payment. It feels good to win against the system for once!

My taxes have gone down for the past two years due to property values going down the crapper. Sadly, that's the only way to pay less taxes, it seems.

That s great Tbone but that is like having your legs removed so you will have to buy less clothing. Now you can buy more lottery tickets.

They went down without you having to contest it? They don't voluntarily reduce taxes around here!

That's awesome Tom. I have thought of doing the same thing. I am glad to hear that the system finally worked in favor of the little guy for once.

I hate to rain on your parade but I guarantee in some form or another the Govt will get back its pound of flesh or $83 a month or you will get an insurance premium increase.:mad2::)

Hey this is ILL, Home to the Socialist Democrats, thus your taxes will go up somewhere. I love it one of the largest Company's in ILL is Cat, they announced yesterday with the demands of the unions and "new" state taxes they plan to leave to a southern state or out of the country. Seems the healthcare laws are also killing them so Mex is looking pretty good now! Geee what a surprize!

Don't believe it for a minute. Cat will moan and groan about how expensive Ill is and then Ill will tell Cat if they stay they won't have to pay taxes and the State will even help the with the cost of the new expansion Cat ultimately wants. It's a game and the little guy gets the shaft either way. Politics as usual.

My assessment for 2011 went down $26,000 after bouncing up by about the same amount in 2010. RE Taxes will stay about the same since the rate per $100 of value goes up when the assessment goes down and vice versa. Maybe this was a correction and the prices are beginning to stabilize. By law in Virginia, property must be assessed within +/- 5% of true value.

You must have a really big home/property.

Here is a pic I shot leaving Charlie's (Bluerauder)place last year. It's not as big as RF Overlord's place but Chuckie does have a sweet 9 hole course out back;)

My property value has been going down 10k per year according to the state for the past 3 years. The other townhouses like mine are selling for 50-60k less than I owe, so the state is still behind on that; but somehow even when they lower the value of the house the taxes get increased just enough so I pay the same amount save a few pennies here or there... I have a feeling when/if the value of the house was to increase, the percentages would stay the same, and taxes would overall increase...

When I was there in 2009 he told me pics were not allowed due to security reasons.

This ^^^^^^ has not been my experience with my local Real Estate taxes in Virginia. When property values began to skyrocket beginning in about 1999, there was increasing pressure on the local Board of County Supervisors to lower the RE Tax rate down to a level that would support "modest" growth of about 3% in the county budget. We entered 1999 with a rate of $1.34 per hundred and at the peak of the real estate boom, the rate had been lowered to about $0.88 per hundred. It is now moving toward $1.21 with the decrease in assessments.

I think my county is pretty fiscally responsible and understand how much the residents can bear. Of course, I recognize that this is not always the way things are done in local politics and some like to spend that windfall caused by inflated home values.
