need your thoughts here guys
i bout a 79 f250 a few weeks ago with the head already pulled off it. the PO said "it started smoking", not very helpful :rolleyes:
so i took a gamble and cleaned the head up and checked for visible damage oh which i found none. put a straight edge on it and didnt see any warpage with the naked eye.
i then bought a gasket kit and put the motor back together. i got it to light off and well lets say the exhaust could extinguish a small brush fire, its pumping out tons of water from exhaust, it was actually quite comical.
unless i over looked a major crack in the head, the only thing i can think is that the block is cracked some where letting water in one of the chambers. would i be correct to assume this or am i possibly overlooking something?
should also note that this motor has been bored at some point as on the top of the pistons have a ".040" stamped on top.

Intake manifold gaskets or cracks could do that too.

i dont see on an intake manifold gasket could do this on a straight 6.

Leakdown test might tell ya.....
If it's the block, sorry, man.....
The other thing to consider is I've seen cases where a muffler and/or cat was full of coolant/water and the way it was designed it didn't blow out so it can take a fair amount of running before the steam stops pouring out of the exhaust.
So did the water level drop, other than the system burping? If so pull the plugs and see if you can tell which cylinder(s) are getting getting water in them.

Depends on how much water is coming out, was there any coolant in the water? I agree it could just be water in the exhaust line but if its gushing out then youve either got a bad head gasket of a bad block. Try it again and see if the water goes away after a few seconds, if not then its internal.

Depends on how much water is coming out, was there any coolant in the water? I agree it could just be water in the exhaust line but if its gushing out then youve either got a bad head gasket of a bad block. Try it again and see if the water goes away after a few seconds, if not then its internal.
its most definitely trying to burn the water and no its not just water in the exhaust. also the oil is full of water. looks like if the weather ever gets nice ill pull it back off and look

You never mentioned I-6. I figured a 250 would have a V8 in it. Does it have liners in the cylinders or was the block bored out?

well i found the problem, see for yourself

it was on the front side of cylinder 5 so if you are looking under the hood at the motor its pretty hard to see. im kinda mad i didnt look at it closer but oh well, im only out a few bucks for gaskets and im pretty good at working on 300s now :lol:
im pretty sure this is because of the over bore. the wall looks extremely thin where it broke. also the piston can rock on the wrist pin about 10* in either direction so the skirt must have went away lol
found a guy on CL with a motor for 450 that is still in a running truck so im going tomorrow to pick it up

and Paul, im pretty sure you could get a 300 in even a 350 back then. they are damn good motors and damn near bullet proof and make good TQ very low int he rpm band. they also get about 15mpg.

I know nothing about these trucks or what engines were available.

I agree. One of Fords best designs.
I remember seeing an injected one in a dragster that was super-fast.
