Automakers are known to throw some pretty swanky soirees for a variety of reasons; launching a new car model, the Detroit Auto Show, or some kind of motorsports victory. While the 2012 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet isn’t exactly a “new” car, there is good reason for Ford to celebrate the delivery of these special drag racers.

And while Autoblog was invited to the party, our invitations seem to have gotten lost in the mail. The venerable AB does say that Ford maintains that this Cobra Jet is the fastest accelerating production car ever. Ever ever?

That’s a pretty bold claim, but there’s got to be some truth to it. The already-sold-out 2012 Cobra Jet comes with a 5.4 liter all-aluminum engine in two flavors; 425 horsepower and 500 horsepower. In the lightened, race-ready chassis, this is good for a 10-second quarter-mile time and a 60-ft of just 1.3 seconds. Ford wouldn’t say what the 0-60 time is, but its got to be damn quick. Costing between $91,990 and almost $104,000, it’s the most expensive vehicle with a Blue Oval badge by a wide, wide margin.

Of course, the cost to build such a car yourself would easily run over $100,000. With the 4.0 liter supercharger option, the Cobra Jet will even do the quarter-mile in the single digits. In a car straight from Ford’s factory. How many other automakers can make that kind of claim? Not too many, that’s for sure. Maybe next time, Ford will send us an e-vite to the party instead. We’d love to take a few trips down the drag strip.

425 and 500hp... right...

in 2000 that motor (ok, close to it) made 385hp na; you mean to tell me it gained only 40hp with a blower? ;)

Will have to see the #s to refute the "...Fastest Accelerating Production Car Ever".

For the FoMoCo family of vehicles, I'd put $$$$$ that it would be the 427 Cobra. I seem to recall 10.5sec 0 > 100 >0 MPH times for a street / de-tuned version of the 427 Cobra with street tires. *And that was is the late '60s.

I like how you think!....:burnout:....:burn:

BTW: Those 5.4 S/C engines are detuned to meet the class rules.

I had a chance to see the first 2010's built up. When they started those bad boys you could hear them for half a mile. They were sold even before we built the bodies and then had them prepped for the dragstrip.

The engineers said the 500 HP claim is "conservative", and were rumors floating numbers a lot higher than that. Like about additional +200 HP.

I recall seeing a video of one of the first 2010's doing a wheelstand that almost flipped the car over. They decided they needed a little more equipment in the form of wheelie bars after that. I saw the car back at AutoAlliance in Flat Rock, MI with the damaged rear fascia, when they were replacing it. My guess is that you can find those videos on YouTube or somewhere on the internet.

My desktop is a photo of the 2010 Super Cobra Jet doing a burnout. Gives me a grin every time I boot up the computer.:D

The GT40 from a few years ago was sticker priced around $150k. I doubt if any were sold without a big mark-up.

Not my cup of tea as far as paint scheme goes. But it's pretty damn cool to have a factory drag car again.

IIRC Cobra jets were not givin proper paperwork to make them street legal, just a bill of sale or something along those lines. Besides, I thought the lights were painted on these?
