I'm changing the outer tie rods on one of my cars, and have the choice of going stock parts (sealed) or aftermarket (greasable).

Is one better than the other? Why?

Note: I only have one bad rod end, so changing to a stock one is cheaper because I only need to change one instead of two. Is this a bad idea too? I've heard to change both no matter what.

steering, suspension and brakes always done in pairs!
Unless you like the idea of not steering or stopping your Marauder.
Go with the grease fittings .

The stock part lasted how long before needing replacement? 8 years or so? All the while requiring no maintenance. The greaseable end link requires greasing every so often, probably once a year or so.

Yes the stock rod-end has lasted from new in '07 until now (it's not my Marauder). 4.5 years.
This is what I'm thinking too - except that I've been told greasable is better but I don't know why.

IMHO....

Greaseable is always better because..........

Keeps the parts lubricated - less wear on the parts.

Keeps dust, dirty and water out - less wear on the parts.

When I replace any chassis or drive train components I will always try to get a replacement part with a grease fitting.

Use synthetic grease.

Grease components at least once a year or at every oil change.

Greasable FTW! Unless it's a daily driver you do not plan on keeping longer than you already have, then go with the oem part. Save some doe.

i agree with suspension and brakes but steering is not necessary. If there is no play in a tie rod then there is no need to replace it.

Personally i like OEM sealed. I usually forget to grease the greasable ones and they end up seizing a year later. Its all personal preference really. Get the one that makes you feel warm and fuzzy.

If you're going to buy Ford genuine or Motorcraft part then greaseless is good, cheap Chinese greaseless tie rods you're asking for trouble, as a matter of fact go Ford or go MOOG bypass everything else.
