Only problem my dad had with his '01 was consistently having issues with the coil-on-plug setup. He had an '01 and an '03 I think, and by '03 they had addressed whatever that issue was though apparently.

"NHTSA says there are 243 reports of the tanks falling and causing two fires. No injuries have been reported."

POINT #1: No indcation of where the affected vehicles were located (e.g. snowbelt with exposure to high road salt or East/West coast with high atmospheric salt content, farm or construction vehicles with exposure to mud or other severe service conditions).

POINT #2: 243 reports out of 2.7 million vehicles built, or 1 in 11,111 odds of you having an issue with the gas tank falling off your F-150 pick up.

This has actually happened to me. With my 1997 Ford 150 (w/ canadian winter package which gives u the beefier tranny & 10.25 rear) basically a f-250 NON-super duty drive train...

But ya My ex was driving the pick-up about 3years ago & the strap had rusted & broke spilling nearly a full tank of gas while she continued to drive the remaining 2 blocks to get home... leaving a trail of gas along the road... This gas needed to be cleaned up & the local gov sprung into action & put kitty liter on it... & charged my $1,800 for the clean up...!

I wonder if I report his indecent to Ford if they will do anything or do I just become a stat.

Now that Ford has issued a recall odd are in your favor they will pay.

i mean really? this could happen with any vehicle. those trucks are min of 10 years old. this seems pointless

just saying the recall sounds like BS. i have a 79 with the straps still there but they could rust out at at time. i dont see how its a recall.

Read the article again.

There has not been an official recall as of late. Just an investigation.

There are a lot of trucks that have lost tanks for being that young a vehicle.

Conveniently here in WI the metal gas tanks last about as long as the straps do in the older Fords, so you just replace them at the same time. 10 years sounds about right.

Up in WI, a lot of vehicles are about rusted through in 10 years due to road salt; I think MSNBC's pot-stirring.The number is an understatement, I just replaced the rear strap on my 99 F150 Flareside Extended Cab about 10 days ago, the front one was replaced last spring after a client told me about her son having dropped his gas tank in the parking lot of a local shopping center. Truck was same age as mine. I made no report to Ford or anyone about the strap other than purchasing the strap from Ford. Yes, I live in Northern Ohio, where we do have a lot of snow, and undercarriage is quite rusty. Explains why my 9 year old MM has never seen snow or salt.
