im not sure if i shared this truck with you guys or not. while cruising CL for parts i came across this truck. he was willing to part it out but i thought it looked too nice to part it so i bought the whole thing for 1500 bucks. it wasn't running at the time and that was just fine with me. its pretty rust free for where i live so the price wasn't really crazy. and it also has a dana 60 up front which pretty much made the price a steal for around here. that was his asking price, i didnt even try to haggle with him since i knew what i was getting, i dont really like to do that if the guys asking price is fair.

anyway, the truck has a 300 and the guy said " it just started smoking one day" not very much help but oh well. he had already pulled the head off the motor and when i looked i didn't see any visible damage. i checked the heads for cracks or bad valve seats but didnt see any. so i took a gamble and bought a head gasket and a valve cover gasket and put it back together. well she started up but something obviously very wrong. the tail pipe looked like a garden hose with the amount of water coming out of the tail pipe. so i took it back apart and saw what i missed the first time. a GIANT crack in #5. im not sure how the hell i missed it the first time other then its on the front of the cyl so when you are looking at it fromt he front of the truck you dont see it.

so i hoped on CL and found a motor over in NJ who turned out to be a member here. i saw the motor run then we ripped it out the truck. i was going to put new seals in this motor but when we tore it down it was clear i wasnt putting this motor in my truck with out a full rebuild. it had a few rod bearings that were loose, which i couldnt hear knocking when it was running but they were there. i started pricing out my options and by the time i got everything machined and all the parts i would need the price tag quickly climbed. i found on ebay a reman motor for a grand which seemed like a really good deal considering id be damn close to that by the time i rebuilt the other one and got it all together so i bought it. it showed up friday.

anyway, enough talk, heres the pics of the truck

Great price. Here in WI a 78-79 Ford Hi pinion Dana 60 goes for about $800, and the sheet metal looks pretty good.

Great looking truck, I quit liking Ford trucks after the 1980's came out. Keep us informed on the progress.

so ive been away for a few weeks and got back last sunday. i finally got the 300 off the pallet and all dressed up. ive been waiting for parts so i haven't been able to get it between the frame rails until now!

to start off i cleaned everything and painted it. the block was already painted gray when i got it so i didnt see any reason to paint it again. painted the rest of the stuff with ford blue and cast iron. i painted the 4bbl intake too and the EFI manifolds are getting ceramic coated.

anyway heres the pics

i would have painted the manifolds but every high temp paint ive used really dont last. and i didnt want them getting rusty so i sent them to the coater. the intake is alum but the when i put the edelbrock on my 360 it got all corroded and gross so i painted this one

well i got the old girl to run and it seems to be running damn well. i had to adjust the float on the carb a bit as it was over filling but not it seems to be good. i also had to get a stupid bugs nest out of the fuel line, damn bees. im waiting on an air cleaner from summit then all i have left to do is fab a bracket for the throttle cable, put on the last 2 belts, and finish the exhaust. oh and i found out the radiator has a ton of leaks so it looks like ill need one of these too. after allt hat is good i have to gover over the rest of the truck to make sure its road worthy. enough :-blah here the pics and a vid

nope, its an after market piece. i didnt want it to be too loud so i went with a rust master. sounds more "v-eighty" too. this motor better last, the money spent on this damn truck has accumulated quickly. my 1500 dollar steal is turning into a 5k+ project :shake:

So Dave noted the movies re planes, do ya ever get a chance to fly in them? In 1966 I was with Vf 126 at Miramar Calif. Had got my Hop cards and was in charge of who had the chance for the back seat! :-) Guess who got the first chance! Logged over 80 hours in a TA4, our squadon and about 50 in a F4's our other partner squadron for training. Couldn't begin to explain those Days!

so im finally back in town once again, and making progress again :-X06

i ordered pretty much the rest of the stuff i needed while i was away and it was all here when i got back. though i dont have very many pictures i did make some good progress today. i finished up my exhaust system and got it hung and clamped, pretty happy with how it came out. then i swapped the pressure side PS line out since it didnt wana seal. i then moved on to changing all the gear oil in the truck.

incase anyone is curious, a d60 front and rear truck with a 435 and 205 will need 3 gallons of gear lube if you change it all. though when i drained it it still looked clean so it was probably unnecessary but now its all fresh.

heres the finished exhaust all welded up

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/79%20f250/IMG_2859.jpg

now for the fun, while draining the trans, i herd a few things fall into the drain pan....never a good thing unless you dropped the plug, not the case this time, after feeling around the pan wrist deep in gear fluid heres what i found

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/blaster250cr/79%20f250/IMG_2862.jpg

2 full needles and 2 broken pieces that dont match. this cant be good.

the trucks almost ready!

its all but finished, all i have to do is make 2 new break lines down to the prop valve that i broke :-arrgh and put the hood on. oh and rebuild the trans :-arrgh

today i made a very simple fix for the stock cable to use it on the 4bb. i just cut a 1x1 piece of angle and tacked it to the valve cover and put a bolt through where it was originally. piece of cake. i bolted the air cleaner on, and bolted the coil up then finished wiring the choke.

i heard the 78-79 fords are pretty bulletproof. i saw a 79 bronco pull out a 26' long motorhome stuck in the sand at pismo beach.

i borrowed them from a friend to squeeze it on my trailer, its a tight fit lol. any ford older then 80 are pretty much tanks. i own 5 of them. 80-97 aint bad either.

We had a 86 Bronco at our station that went through a 20' snowdrift during the blizzard of "93". That was an absolute beast, in contrast, the 96 we had was no where near as good. It never would have made it.
