He was an American icon in his time. I liked the old show and enjoyed the later years TV movies he made in early nineties. I don't remember him being in and out of rehab or jail .

As a little kid in the 50's, he scared the hell out of me in "The Thing".
Also enjoyed his work in "Them".

An American icon.
BTW, didn't know it until reading an article on his passing, but Peter Graves was his brother.

Its strange, as a kid and teenager I didnt like that show (preferred High Chaparral) but nowadays I have been watching reruns of it every week. RIP James Arness.
Loved that show! Is Festus still alive? Who used to sing the dirty song when you were a kid "My name is Matt Dillon, I do all the killin', and I make 5 pesos a day, I go to Miss Kitty's and I...."...well you can probably guess the rest.
